engine oil consumption?
Hello All,
A few questions from a mechanical small-brain about engine oil consumption ...
I've got a '91 Tengai with ~60000 km on the clock. Oil consumption is more than 1 liter oil/1000
km. Seems to be at the veeery high end of normal, if not over the edge.
I've read somewhere that up to 1 liter/1000 km is not unusual for a large single (XT600, SR500).
Also read somewhere else that on new BMWs 1 liter oil/1500 km is within spec.
She doesn't smoke, has plenty of power, no oil leaks anywhere and starts immediately on first button
push.
Sooo ... :
(1) Were does all the oil go ?????????
(2) Has the bike got a problem? (other than needing to top up a lot)
(3) Should anything be done about it?
(4) What can be done about it?
Any help/explanation/advice most appreciated.

Try not running the bike at higher revs all the time, the oil consumption should go down quite a bit.> push. > > Sooo ... : > (1) Were does all the oil go ?????????

No, that is a lot of oil consumption. I have two SR500s, one of which has 35,000mi and I ride the sh*t out of, lots of 80mph highway runs, shifting at the redline, etc. It barely uses oil at all really, maybe a 200cc or so every 1500mi, if that much.> > I've got a '91 Tengai with ~60000 km on the clock. "Spec" is set so the dealer and manufacturer have the opportunity to deny a problem exists if it isn't catastrophic. Can a bike even meet it's emissions goals if it burns 1 liter of oil every 1500km? I don't think an RD350 uses that much.> > Also read somewhere else that on new BMWs 1 liter oil/1500 km is within spec. >
You're burning it, just burning it hot enough so the plug doesn't foul and the oil doesn't smoke. That's my guess. Make sure you're checking the oil level on level ground, with the bike level. But it would be hard to miss a liter.> > She doesn't smoke, has plenty of power, no oil leaks anywhere and starts immediately on first button > push. > Sooo ... : > (1) Were does all the oil go ?????????
Rings, wear on cylinder, worn valve guides/seals?> > (2) Has the bike got a problem? (other than needing to top up a lot)
If it were my bike, I would just carry a can of oil with me (and top up at every tankful) until it got worse, or something else happened that led me to open up the motor. Then it sounds like it might be time for an oversize piston, etc.. Devon A15> > (3) Should anything be done about it? > (4) What can be done about it?

Most likely oil is getting past the piston and rings and being burned up. You would only see it if you were following really closely behind and paying close attention. Have someone follow you , observing you closely while under hard accleration. I had a hi mileage KLR that burned zero oil, and a much fresher KLR motor that burned oil from day one, go figure. I just deal with it until I get a chance to tear down the top end. "Had" a hi mileage KLR? Why don't you have it any more? Is this the A4 listed on the KLR650 Registry that had 90,000 miles on it a year ago? Did you ever have to do any engine work to it? http://www.micapeak.com/reg/bikes/KLR My KLR has 56,000 on it, and I am beginning to be concerned about the reliability. Don't want to be 2,000 miles from home, and have it have a major breakdown. I've seen very few KLRs with more miles than mine. One of them had the valves replaced. So, I'd like to hear from high mileage KLR owners, cuz I feel like mine is starting to get there. Where does one draw the line and retire "Ol' Faithful"? The only engine work other than a stripped oil drain bolt, was a proactive replacement of the doohickey bolt and washer and balancer chain at 55,000 miles. The bike was parted out at approx. 90,000 mi., as I bought one of elden's KLRs. Elden got my old bike and it was still running well. I went 90,000 because I didn't want anyone else breaking my record, although people have, they are not on the list. Conall-wish I went 100,000 for the recognition from KHI good times club. _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963>From: "Allan Patton" >To: DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com> >Subject: Re: [DSN_klr650] Engine Oil Consumption? >Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2003 00:29:04 -0600 > >----- Original Message ----- > > I had a hi mileage KLR that burned zero oil, and a much > > fresher KLR motor that burned oil from day one, go figure. > > Conall > >"Had" a hi mileage KLR? engine oil consumption?
Hello There,
Many thx for your answer.
When I commute to work on curvy suburban roads along the sea I usually rev her no higher than 4000.
When I do weekend tours I cruise at 4500 and usually rev her no higher than
5000.
Is that too high?
