shroud screws
Hello. I now have about 500 kms on my 2003. I lost one of the
shroud screws on one of my first rides. The dealer told me that was
one the screws that the factory is supposed to have tightened. Since
then another screw came loose. I figured that a big single would
require a little more attention in this area than my previous bikes
did. However, will I have to check these screws every 3rd ride, or
is there a loc-tite solution. How do you guys handle this?
Thanks,
Andy.

Go over the whole bike with a fine-tooth blue loctite comb and then
just check 'em when you're working on the bike (or every 500-1000
miles or so). Fortunately the stuff that comes off is generally
cosmetic....

I don't call them shrouds, I call them wings, because they are always trying to fly off. Zip ties work well. Carry some with you. The black zip ties don 't show as bad. One more trick is to damage the second or third thread on the screw. Smash the thread a tiny bit, but don't do it to the first thread, you need it for a starter. The "interference fit" will make it harder for the screw to back out. Allan A14>>>How do you guys handle this?

I just use the medium loctite, Andy. That, and a metric screw assortment from Dennis Kirk. It's come in real handy at times..like when I lost a shroud bolt. Watch the (3) bolts holding the windscreen, & loctite the (2) bolts holding the passenger grab handle/luggage rack. I basically loctite any bolt I take off for regular maintenance too. Course, keep the loctite away from the plastic. Have yet to lose a loc-tited bolt. unrelated side note of the day: How about that new 355lb, 123 hp ZX-6R eh? I was greasing my rear bearings today to get rid of a noise. To my surprise
the noise was coming from a loose rear rotor. A-16 18000 since April. TC

Use medium loctite (blue liquid in a red tube), until the first time you drop the bike and break off the tabs. Then, drill two
holes on either side of the guard bar or radiator grill and zip-tie it.

Is there ANYTHING worse than those tiny little screws that are so hard to
reach? I would kill the person responsible for designing the shrouds like
that with my hands if I could find him.

After I broke my tabs, I went down to the hardware store and picked up some small L brackets. Drilled some holes in the shroud where the tab used to be in order to connect the L bracket and then bolted the shrouds back on using the orginal shroud mounting screw. Ha ha! The first time I dropped the bike, I didn't break off the tabs, because the dealer hadn't tightened *any* of the screws holding *any* of the trim on (in fact, they left serveral off). Bike hit ground, all the screws on that side were so loose they just *fell out* (no joke), Thor scratched his head a lot, looked for broken bits of screws where he thought there ought to be some, then applied blue loctite, whistling as he worked.> Use medium loctite (blue liquid in a red tube), until the first time you > drop the bike and break off the tabs.
