nklr - snell is more for car impacts
I learned a while back that the Snell helmet ratings that I valued so much
were actually for car impact standards and not for motorcycle. If you have a
Snell rated helmet it did pass more tests than a DOT but the testing was not
designed around 2 wheeler type impacts.
Head injuries from car racing are very different from mellon to pavement moto
related get off's.
Feel free to correct me if you know different.

AFAIK Snell has multiple standards for multiple helmet types. The SNELL
foundation was originally founded by the family of an auto racer, who
was killed in a minor impact because his helmet didn't protect him.
But a Snell rated cycle helmet meets its own set of tests, different
than car helmets, and whatever else Snell tests.
Snell tests for harder impacts than DOT. A DOT helmet will probably
protect you better in a lower speed accident since the liner will absorb
more force. But a Snell will protect you better from higher-energy
impacts, though it may not crush as much (and therefore transmit more
force to your head) at a low-speed impact. That's why they're popular
(and required) for racing.
I got my info from a magazine interview with the testing director of the
Snell foundation, that I read a few years ago.

Jay, Actually, there are Snell helmet standards for everything from competitive auto racing to horseback riding, including one for motorcycling; check out www.smf.org. My understanding is that the Snell motorcycling standard is biased towards impacts expected on the race track, while the DOT standard is oriented more for the street. If you can pick your accident, you can pick the right helmet standard. People go around and around about helmet standards, but the most important thing is to buy a comfortable helmet that fits correctly and that's legal for street use (meets DOT), then wear it religiously. __Arden> related get off's. > > Feel free to correct me if you know different. >

Last time we took the Pope riding, he couldn't go over 55 due to that skid lid he had on. But at a smoke break, he did manage to let us know that from now on the priests were allowed to kiss the nuns, as long as they didn't get into the habit.
