radiator fan?

Post by Ricardo Pontes » Wed Nov 06, 2002 10:37 am

I think my radiator fan is not working! I have not heard it in quite a while. Its plugged in. Anyone know how i can go about fixing it? Its been like that for a while. I crashed a while back, and it was on the left side, but it worked after the crash and i never thought about it before. I had radiator crash bars that took most of the damage. Lemme know. I dont know much about technical stuff

First, with the ignition off try spinning the fan blades. See if they turn freely. Second, disconnect the wire leading to the temperature sensor at the bottom of the radiator (the blade connector that sticks out of the radiator on the bottom rear side), and ground that wire to a shiny spot on the cylinder. The fan should turn on immediately. If it does, then you either have a bad sensor or a very dirty connection. Try cleaning the connector and see what happens. Third, there is a fuse under the right side radiator shroud for the fan motor. Replace it and see if the fan works (grounding the wire). The fuse can look good but still be broken inside one of the end caps. Beyond that, there is a relay for the fan motor but I'm not sure where it is. You could check for that by jumpering around the relay (be prepared for sparks), but I don't know where the fan relay is. Devon A15 Ricardo Pontes wrote:

I seem to remember that the relay assembly is attached to the frame. You can follow the wire from the fuse; that will lead you to it. I'm not a real electrician but I'm not sure it would be a good idea to jump the relay. You can test the relay with a multimeter. The procedure is outlined in one of the manuals. The test is a bit complicated but if I can do it Ricardo or a friend conversant with electrics can too. Bogdan

Or, if it's cold where you live, the bike may not be getting warm enough to need the fan. I haven't heard mine in weeks. __Arden

Yes, Conall is right- the plastic KLR650 fan is unlikely to cause serious injury if you get your fingers in it, BUT turning off the ignition is not a guarantee that the fan will not run- even with the ignition off, if the motor is hot the fan will run. Devon Conall O'Brien wrote:

Also, the fan motor needs a ground. So check to see that there is a good ground between the fan and the frame. Your ohm meter should read close to zero between the metal fan body and the frame. Saw this one before. Mark. A11

I did that, and apparently the fan works. I stuck the little switch ont he motor cylinder, and it spun immediatly. Its a relief, i wonder if im just paranoid. Is the fan soppose to work while im riding(and im not hearing it) or is it soppose to go on after i stop the bike? Damm, im glad we have this list. Cause i received tons of good information. Thanx guys. -----Original Message----- From: david gay [mailto:davidlg76@...] Sent: Thursday, November 07, 2002 6:01 PM To: Ricardo Pontes Subject: Re: [DSN_klr650] radiator fan? There's a wire on the bottom of the radiator that goes to the temp sw. Unplug that wire and put it to ground. It's has a spade terminal, and I just unplug it and put it against a fin on the motor. Even without the key on, the fan should run when you ground the wire. Its a quick check to see if the fan motor is still good. If it comes on, its probably the temp sw thats bad. But, check the fuse over on the other side of the bike. It's zip tied to the coolant bottle bracket. 10 amp glass fuse. Hope this helps dude. Start the bike and let it idle for about 5 minutes or so, when it gets hot the fan should kick on. If the temp gauge really gets high and the fan did'nt come on, then trouble shoot it, could be anything from the temp sensor or loose wire. Rolling I never hear the fan, sometimes around town I can. Typically my fan will come on when I park the bike if I was riding slow speeds just prior to stopping. But only run for a few seconds. Dooden

It should come on whenever the system / coolant reaches the preset temp. If it's a concern, you could rewire, and add a toggle switch so that you can control when the fan is running, switching it on or off as you choose. That wouldn't work for me, because I'm half deaf and three quarters senile. I'd forget and leave the fan on, and never know it... Could wire it into the switch circuit and mount a red indicator light I suspose with a pulsing piezo beeper so you look like a matchbox firetruck coming down the road. ;-) Dooden
