how many people own a "cool" bike in addition to klr?

Post by S. B. Lawrence » Wed Nov 06, 2002 10:46 am

I've owned both. The better launcher would IAL win any drag race because, like you said, raw HP numbers are not the whole story (fwiw the 883 is rated conservatively to make the 1200's price premium look like less of a ripoff than it really is). As for curves, it would depend on how rough the road is. Base model mid-control Sportsters have respectable clearance and geometry (as opposed to the more radical "C" models) and can go around curves far better than you think on a *smooth* road. They have been known to embarrass many a sportbike novice. But basic suspension that's weak on control and short on travel will force a bone-stocker to slow *way* down at the first sign of imperfect pavement.

Well, if it's going to be the coolest bike ever owned, then mine has to be the DBD34 Gold Star. It was a beater, so I didn't have to be afraid to ride it. It's still around, and I wish I still had it, natch.

Coolest bike that I had when I was young, had to be a 1975 Suzuki GT-750 Water buffalo. It had J&R expansion chambers and K&N individual Air filters. Sounded like a mad bubble bee. Of course it was one hell of a flexey flyer around corners, but at 16 I thought all bikes handled that way. Dave A12 Robert Diaz wrote:Ok since we are on the coolest bike ever owned thread, I would like to chip in with my coolest bike. I would have to say it was a Yammy RD 400, man that was a quick bike! Light to light it was one of the quickest bikes I have ever owned. The only thing with that bike was that everybody I knew that had one eventually wrecked it because it was too fast! Great bike for wheelies and for those off the light races. I still occasionally pick up a Cycle Trader and check the Yammy section for an RD 400. Hopefully I can pick one up in good condition someday. My .02! Cheers! Rob D A15 '84 KL 600 The coolest bike I ever owned was a '75 Honda CB400 Four, in red.

Has to be a Kawasaki Samurai 350 A7 - 2 stroke twin, with rotary valves and oil injection (cool for '67). Wild torque and surging HP, the bike was quick even by todays standards, Kawasaki's response to the RD350 (looking into the future 5 years...)? http://www.kjmv.nl/fotogalerij/kawasakiA7350%201968.htm Rev. The introduction for me was a Cushman Eagle, 2 speed, 8hp, prolly a 62 model as I recall. Road the wheels off that sled. Still carry fond memories and a few scars with me. That's the biotch that gave me this infection, wind in yer face, bugs in yer teeth, no tach or speedo, you knew the power band by the sweet song of the exhaust and the feel as the tug of acceleration softens into just a gentle pull, then nothing but harder vibration. Freedom, to ride, pick your line, explore the new world around the next corner, find out early the limits of you skill, live through the slow motion crash, and red-ugly scabs of road rash, and go on later to learn the boundaries of the bike, your bike. Sometimes it's about the road, sometimes about the bike. And now and then, it's about the rider. But the magic only comes alive in the moment of the ride. Mark. A11

Well said Mark. Our country owes more than we can ever repay to the Men that fought or supported our right to remain free. God Bless each and every one of you. TC
