Just bought a used 2 year old klr with only 300 miles on it. Problem is between shifts rpm's climb very quickly to almost 4k and come down slowly, making shifting awkward. Any ideas? Thanks Scott

Scott, Start with the choke and throttle cables. Make sure the choke is going all the way off. Could have corrosion in the cables if the bike sat outside very long, or was washed in a car wash. Use WD-40 on the cables at each end. If that works, use cable lube later. The throttle should be returning against the idle speed screw. If that doesn't do anything, take the tank off, you may be able so see something else wrong. Look for cracked or missing hoses. Look for anything that could cause a vacuum leak. Check and clean the air filter. Look for the obvious before you start into the carburetor. Allan A14

Shift quicker! (Grin) This sound like it might be gettig into the "black magic" part of the bike that I'm not really up on, but I would wonder about two things; the clutch adjustment, and (less likely because I think you'd have mentioned it and/or recognized the relationship) the idle setting. 2 years old and only 300 miles ?? Jeeesh that thing aint even broke in yet. Check the throttle cables for binding ? Does it idle smooth ? If you twist the throttle idling and let go quickly does the RPM's do the same ? Does the clutch feel adjusted right ? Possible Vacuum leak ? Are you rolling the throttle back during your shifting ? My bike has loosened up after a year or so, but not alot of miles due to various reasons. Check the obvious, hope that bike dont have the factory oil still in it after two years. Dooden
