taller wind shield for a 6 footer

Post by em905069 » Thu Aug 29, 2002 2:26 am

I have been watching the posts and have been waiting to hear some info on what height a wind screen should be for a person who is 6'0. I am definately taller in the body than the legs. I think my inseam is a 30 or 31. I don't have alot of KLR riders close to me and everything has to be ordered. I just don't want to end up spending a wad a cash and have the wind smashing me in the face. Any advice from those 6'0 or a bit taller? - Everett

Everyone's preferences and situation are going to be different. The best way I know to tell you what works for you is to use your left hand and feel where the wind comes off your windshield and where it hits you. If you need to move this layer of air up or down, size your windscreen accordingly. It is best to keep this layer of turbulent air off your head. You need to have your head above or below this layer. Riding with your head in this turbulent air will cause blurred vision and headaches. Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com http://www.canyonlandsmotorclassic.com

I sympathise. I'm 6'3", with a long torso. The rule of thumb is that you should just barely look over the top edge of the screen, rather than looking through it. You can find the right height by sitting on the bike in your normal riding position, holding a finger at nose height, and taking a measurement. Or, you can do what I did- use duct tape and cardboard mockups to find your target height. My mockups confirmed the rule of thumb, by the way. Unfortunately, even after you find the perfect height, you have to consider your off-road habits. Tall screens tend to break, plus you risk chopping your head off over bumps... In my case, I nixed the ideal (Clearview +11 shield), and ordered the Kawasaki accessory unit instead. Although the airstream hits a little low, it's still quieter than the stock shield. I was able to eliminate minor helmet buffeting by adding Saeng "stealth edging". I must admit that after adding the cost of the Saeng edging to the price of the Kawi windshield, I wonder if it was all worth it. YMMV... Steve Rolfe '02 A16

Maybe so, but you should see the size peoples eyes get when I come around a corner on the KLR and they are doing less than proper activities.. Caught one on a gravel county road with a pistol hanging out the window, a road sign had 5 bullet holes into, im pretty sure there was one round still in that revolver. When he quickly pulled it back in and the driver drove off like nothing happened. ;-) Or On a trail out in the woods, had a MX type come around and bearing down towards me, I could plainly see his eyes pop behind his googles maybe he figured it was a DNR bike or Sheriff from the color it was painted. Maybe not, but the reaction was still noteworthy to me. And yes, I know my bike looks great.. ;-) Dooden
