i've been busy.... now what do i need?

Hi all, You probably don't remember me. I posted once asking wtf a 'doohickey' was. I'm planning a late fall trip to the 'bottom of Baja and back' from San Diego. So far, the mods I've made are these (to a stock 2002 CA spec KLR): 1. Turned the carb idle screw out a bit. 2. Inserted reusable air filter (dynojet?) 3. Raised the license plate 4. Got rid of CA carbon canister junk 5. Removed side stand starter interlock 6. Changed the handgrips (to a comfy foam pair) 7. Added John Deere (BMW style) 12V power accessory socket 8. Fitted Dual Star center stand (at least they provided instructions - and yes it does seem precarious) 9. Acquired Wolfman tank bag (no fitting instructions, at least, not for the KLR) 10. Had seat modified to be wider (and a mite taller) by NBI San Diego (ace work :-) 11. Fitted and then removed for return a Clearview '+9' tall windshield. It moved the buffeting right to eye level and caused a drumming noise in my helmet. Gone back to stock. The thing seemed to waggle a lot and I wonder how long the puny mounting points would last? 12. Added Happy Trails NW rack for my Givi bags (no instructions, and the supplied bolts seem *way* too long compared to the originals. Works OK, though. I had several tries at aligning the bag mounts before I got it right. It was a race against Loctite time) 13. Added Happy Trails bash plate (need three hands for this job. And I'd got the gear lever position just right but after installation I couldn't change down - mounting bracket in the way - so I had to put it back to that awkward high up stock position :-( ) 14. I'm about to install a Vista Cruise throttle lock I need and pray miserably for advice on what else I absolutely need. My vision of the trip is about 60/40 highway/reasonable dirt roads with little or no rock-climbing involved. Aside from a 'doohickey' job, I'm wondering about the beefed up gear lever, and mebbe a fan/radiator guard, changing the fuse for the lights. So tell me gang, what do I absolutely need? I'm on digest mode, so I won't be able to respond enormously quickly, so I'll thank you all in advance. Cheers, -- Simon

I would put a rad guard in the list of things to add unless you are absolutely sure you won't fall down on the left side. One drop is all it takes to smash the expensive rad. The Dual-Star unit is high quality fits perfect and looks good. It's cheap insurance. I would also add a set of real handguards with a metal band in them to protect the levers in case of a fall. Add to that: - DS Shift lever. For the same reason (fall down, go boom). - Consider a subframe upgrade kit. You may not need it if you spend a lot of time on flat roads, but you will be carrying luggage which adds stress to the OEM bolts. - Slime the tubes. $12-$15 flat insurance. Total Cost: About $60 and a couple hours of your time. Todd (Springfield, VA)

So tell me gang, what do I absolutely need? >> You need a headlight guard, Jake has a nice one at sagebrush, you need a Radiator guard, I have one and there sold by other companys GPS is nice but not needed as in the above stuff, aluminum hand guards, Maier makes some good cheap ones, Mexico is a blast, Check out copper canyon if you get the chance, Its like stepping back in time 100 years, But its changing fast and will not be that way for long. From The Great White North, Just got my "new to me" stock rack courtesy eBay and a chap parting out a KLR down east. The crooks that stole my bike 4 years ago pulled it off for some reason. Has anyone compiled a list of the bolts found on an C9 / 1995 KLR? I'd like to get replace the missing bolts as well as any others that I can find with better ones if possible.
