another oil question

Don, what year is that supplement? SE and SF are OLD oil specifications (there was an SG and SH in between), try finding an oil that meets SE and SF but NOT SJ. 'Cause SJ has friction modifiers in it, and I'm pretty sure I read in my manual (supplement for '00 or '99, don't remember and it's not handy) that the only one recommended was 20w50. Probably because 20w50 is the only grade that does not require friction modifiers under the SJ spec. When you offer corrections to someone's advice, please make sure it's accurate past 1988 (http://www.ibmwr.org/otech/oilreport.html#charta), and please spell words correctly. My Kawasaki supplement is: Sixth Edition (1): Sep.29,1999(K) I'm not "pretty Sure", I'm looking at the supplement right now. BTW ... a misspelled word is not as important as BS advice. Don Detloff Fair Haven, MI, USA

Kurt, My original post WAS to the point. A member asked about the proper viscosity for the KLR650. Devon replied that Kawasaki DOES NOT recommend 10W40. However, I have found that many items are posted as "fact" when the person posting is only stating an opinion. The "newbie" may not be able to distingush "fact from BS ... excuse me, opionion." When I know someome is posting something as "fact" that is not correct, I feel obligated to point that out. Well, well, well, me and the Killer went out in the dirt today. It's kinda all banged up already, so I had no worries about dropping it, other than having no real protective gear other than a helmet and leather jacket (any recomendations as to what to get?). I haven't been off-roading since I was 16, like 19 years ago! (damn, I just relized how patheticly old I am). Any way, I went ott on some trails that wind out behind the barn where my ex-horse lives and just went to town! There were woos trails and construction roads and fields and power line roads and sand pits and my front tire was bald and it was a BLAST! I had so much fun. I was going wiced (ie very) slow because I'm old and fragile and don't know the trails very well and had visions of a pack of 14 year olds charging the other way on thier quads dancing in my head. For such a small area, there weee lots of trails and terrain. Coming back from my ride I passed a guy on his shiny clean Big BMW GS all ATed (Adventure Toured) out with the aluminium sadle bags and lugage and the $8,000 flip-up full face helmet and every thing. He waved at me and my dirt encrusted KLR and old full-face street helmet with no face shield. I waved back. (A harley guy caught me naping today too, he WAVED FIRST!). Nice bike I have here, but.... There is a 7mm bolt on the right transmission cover that is weeping oil. Not alot, but always. I tried tightening it, and it just spun. I tried loosenig it, but it just spun. What is this thing, is it important, is it broke and do I have to fix it?
