question about klr650 known problems

Post by joe_harley2001 » Thu Jul 25, 2002 12:43 pm

Hello All, I am a relatively new member of this web ring. I own 2000 KLR650 bought brand new, and I have an additional 2003 "on order" from the dealer. I love my 2000, but have had my eyes opened via this web ring to some potentially dangerous design flaws of the bike. Should I be buying yet a second KLR? I had plans to use both bikes one day to travel the ALCAN in Canada with my son. Can these bikes be trusted? I would appreciate any real facts the group may have on this! Thanks, Joe

I expect Tumu to prove that it's the best choice for the ALCAN. Just check your bolts and do required maintenance. I'm sure you must have some idea, having ridden one for 2 years. -Bryan

Joe, Don't let the "Gloom-and-doomers" on this list sway you. The KLR is the best mount for your intended trip. Make whatever changes need to to make the bike comfortable and go for it. Gino, love that 2003 paint scheme.

Joe, Before I joined the list, I put 40k miles on an A1 with no problems besides a burned out rectifier at 20k miles. I didn't know a doohickey from a hole in the ground, just did the balancer chain adjustment as required in the manual. Now that I know about doohickey's I've replaced mine (on my current A11) with a better unit from Jake just for cheap insurance. Many of the other 'problems' reported are easily worked around. The brakes aren't great but they will stop the bike, the shifter probably needs an upgrade but I've been lucky there, too. I've been in the middle of nowhere on my KLR by myself many times and never worried about it getting me back to civilization. I still think it's the best bang for the buck in the bike world, and I look forward to riding mine into the back of beyond at the next opportunity. Have fun in Alaska! __Arden Kysely

In Outlook Express, go to TOOLS/OPTIONS/SEND ... make sure INCLUDE MESSAGE IN REPLY is unchecked. Don Detloff Fair Haven, MI, USA Hey Thanks Don. That worked even better than the cut and paste method. Thank you, and Thanks to Marc for his help. Jim Cedar Creek, Texas
