Hello All, I'm going to go buy a new helmet in a few days. I'm just curious what is considered to be the best. Open face, Full Face or off road and gogles. In my previous life I rode open face but didn't like it much. I was thinking of off road style because I like the brim, but wonder what it would be like riding in the rain all day. Thanks, Mike

I don't ever wish the ride that Devon, Dan and I did to/from the FVTR ride. It was *pouring* rain and we not only froze our asses off as well as being soaked to the bone, but my face was raw from the rain hitting it at 50mph (we were all wearing MX helmets). If your going to be doing a lot of street, then get a street helmet. If dirt, then get a dirt helmet. I don't recommend half helmets for anything other than a trip around town on the scooter. If you can't decide check out the latest crop of flip-front helmets. Zeus, Nolan, Bell, Shoei, Ski-doo, and HJC all make a flip-front model, so you've got plenty of choices. Z DC

Zacks right, the rain feels like rocks over 40mph. Scott makes a face protector that snaps into the bottom of their goggles which works really well at avoiding the beadblasting on your face. Too bad it was on the first set of goggles I lost. That was two or three sets ago. I have a friend who fractured his cheekbone wearing a flip-front helmet. I have both a moto helmet and a full-face street helmet. Both offer enough protection. My head/frontal-right side of my face hit the pavement at 75mph in a moto helmet and I didn't even notice the impact until a week later when I was inspecting my gear recovered from the accident scene. If I could have only one helmet, I'd go with the full-face, but I want to try a flip-up sometime. Mark B2 A2 A3

I have a Nolan N100 for the street and just ordered a HJC CLX-4 for off road. I used the Nolan off road in very hot and dusty conditions once and it sucked. the lack of goggles was a real pain. I had glasses on but this does nothing to keep the dirt out of you eyes. Plus it was hot and I kept hitting my opened visor on tree limbs. Like I said I did this once and that was enough for me. Next ride I'm strapping a duffel containing the HJC to my rack for the highway and changing over at the trails. Karl A14

I have a full face street helmet, and a DOT approved MX style helmet with Scott goggles. If you are planning on hopping on the interstate, or doing better than 45mph fo rlong stretches, I'd recommend AGAINT the MX style...that thing hangin off the top acts like a parachute...I passed a dumptruck goin the opposite direction one day and it almost drug me off the bike...A hard wind gust will also snap yer neck around in a hurry...IF that visor peice is removeable, do so and reattach once off the main drag if need be..

Due to the fact that I ride both off-road as well as commute to work on my A15, I decided to get two helmets...a full-face, street helmet (Bieffe Predator), and because it's getting so friggin hot, and I ride with a great bunch of fellow Dual-Sporters, on some dirt roads...a motorcross type (HJC CLX4-Fuel) as well. I like both for what they're designed for. I know that some folks would argue that I should have gotten a Nolan, etc, but I figure that if I can flip up the face saving part...so could a good crash! The Nolan N100 flip-up is great for everyday riding and the flip feature rocks if you wear glasses BUT off road it's no use. You can't leave it flipped up without it catching on trees and such ( if you ride near trees) and like you said, no protection if it's up. and any helmet that you can't wear goggles with has limited value off road anyway. Me ... i prefer a full face. Heat - 110 plus - in the fase does detract from the riding enjoyment. Speaking of heat ... OK listers ... let's put out collective heads together here. I ride 51 miles one way to work everyday. It' either 85 to 90 mph for 30 minutes or stop and go .... depending on traffic. Either way ... the little "I'm hot" gauge gets well into 3/4 warm zone will doin' the speed. When I drop down out of light speed, the fan comes on, heat spews out, and eventually it cools down. It somestimes takes 5 or 6 miles of normal riding. If it is stop and go ... we decelerate from 85 to 00, the wait, then go like crazy again, then stop .. repeat for an hour. The heat usually does not go right away in stop and go. I hear the little engine that could knockin' under hard gas .... as traffic gets up to warp drive speed in a matter of seconds. Here is the thing. I know heat kills. I change the oil once a month 'cause I ride so far in the heat and 'cause of the milage involved. It is too darn hot on the little A9 not to be changed that often. Yes, I have done all the service on the rad. So ... got any ideas where to get a bigger or more efficent rad.
