Greetings all- I'm back after a several year
absence with my newly acquired A1, with get
this- 1981 miles! (Essentially 1 owner)
Problem is, it was used too INfrequently!
So, I'm in the (fun) process of going through
all the fluids and systems.
This is a three-parter....
1. Tank's got rust- I'm thinking about treating
with one of those so-called "rust converters"
chemical compounds. Anybody used these???
It seems like it would help.
Also, has anyone tried sandblasting the inside?
2. What chemical would work best for removing
a thick tarry gunk out of the reserve chamber
in the fuel valve?
3. Does the reserve side also have a short tube
which sticks up into the tank? If so how long
is it? I'll need to fab one.
(I'm looking for a cheap used manual and supplement
if any one has one also)
Carburetor is next as you could imagine...
I'm not going to dare fire this thing up till
it's clean dontcha know...

fuel valve gunk and misc.
For the tank, I would take off the fuel valve, put some soapy water
inside and two yards of cheap, decorative brass chain. Shake, drain,
repeat until rust flakes stop coming out. Then fill the tank with cheap
molasses (feed and grain store) and wait a week.
If you don't have the patience, muriatic acid should work as well but
then you'll have a disposal problem. I don't think "Rust Reformer" or
similar stuff will hold up to hot gasoline. Stick with purpose-made
chemicals, or just strip the rust and keep the tank full as much as
possible.
If you can disassemble the fuel valve so there are no plastic or rubber
parts, you can use a regular carb dip (autozone, Pep boys, RS Strauss
etc). Otherwise try soaking the whole assembly in WD-40 overnight. Don't
know how well it will soften the gunk but it won't ruin the rubber.
Don't know how long the reserve tap is. Someone just posted a manual,
supplement, and some filters FS.

Someone may have already mentioned this, why not just get an aftermarket plastic tank? I believe you can find them with even more fuel capacity than the stock tank.
