Hello, my 86 KLR600 is running great, starts and idles great, good
power and no engine noises so far. Trouble is, it's started putting
out oil smoke on full throttle blasts. Nothing when idleing or
cruising, just when cracked open from cruise speed. With the
decompressor built in, I get 105lbs of compression as the book says
and the bike only has 9000 kms on the odometer. I may have bad valve
guides? Between the age and low milage she has apparently been
stored
most of her life so maybe valve seals dried up and broke up with the
new use? If there is any valve seals that is? I have ordered a new
top end gasket kit and would like some advice or any suggestions you
guy's can offer before I rip into her. Planning on a head shave to
boost compression to 10-10.5:1 and cam redialing. I have done the
Supertrapp, carb kit and airbox open up already. Rob

It sounds like you are quite comfortable with engine work. Please post
your results with the higher compression, and the cam timing.
I thought (and remember this is "some guy on the internet" giving you
advice) that smoking under load was rings, and smoking on the overrun is
valve guides.
If the bike was stored for a long time, you may have some rust pitting
and scoring on the cylinder wall. A proper leakdown test will tell you
exactly where the motor is leaking. Also, try doing your same
compression test again but dump a tablespoon of oil into the spark plug
hole. If the compression comes up then it's the rings.
I have SR500s, one with a 9:1 piston and one with a 10:1, and I have to
say the difference is impressive. Higher compression is the closest
thing to "free" horsepower (no additional fuel consumption or noise)
that you're going to get, assuming you have a reliable fuel supply.

The other way around. On the overrun, combustion chamber vacuum draws oil up past the rings.> valve guides. >
