a16, irritating noise at 4100 rpm
OK guys, I know the klr is not the quietest or most refined machine on the planet, but I am wondering if someone else has solved this minor irritation. Right at 4100 rpms I get a tinny, metallic (or maybe plastic) sounding sort of buzz, It comes out from behind the fairing, is it tach related??? is it radiator guard related? or the plastic brush guard on the other side? is it top end balancer or cam chain noise? it is subtle, but there consistenly. I have tried to make it go away by playing with the guarding to reduce its vibration, but it is still there. This bike is new with only 360 miles, and I have babied it the best I can. It seemed to show up about 200 miles ago. Has anyone heard this same noise or solved the problem? please help if you can. Todd, Chaska MN

thanks Jake, now that I think about it the black tube is the location from where the sound seems to eminate. thanks very much for the help. I will also look into the headlight area. Todd

The zipper pulls on my tank bag rattle, and make irritating noises
sometimes. It took me a while to find out where the noise was coming from.

a16, irritating noise at 4100 rpm
Hey Todd,
I had the exact same issue - a rattle at 4100rpm. 100rpm over or
under and it was fine. I thought it was comming from behind the
cowling or maybe under the tank, but it turns out that my steering
head was loose.
Good luck,
Tyson

a16, irritating noise at 4100 rpm
I have about 4100 on mine and it also accumulated a few noises. I just
finished a 500 mile ride Saturday. On Sunday I strippeed down the bike for a
good cleaning check the plug and waxing. Today on my commute to work 20
miles one way, there was hardly any noises. TC

Probably a roach clip fell down in the headlight somewhere.
(please, nobody ask me what a roach clip is)

backwards clutch switch???
I download the KLR650 wiring diagram for the 2000 (A14) and 2001 (A15)
from Tammy's "Project KLR650" web site. This is the wiring diagram
from the KLR650 A14/A15 supplemental manual. File size is 1 MB.
A close look at the safety switch sub-system shows NO CHANGES from the
setup in the earlier KLRs. There are the same 3 wires that go to the
clutch lever safety switch. This doesn't guarantee that there hasn't
been a change, but this wiring diagram shows the same safety switch
wiring as the 1995 (A9) and earlier models, including the diode
assembly, side stand switch, starter circuit relay, and clutch
lockout/safety switch.
I don't know if there are any wiring changes for the 2002 (A16)
models. I haven't seen posts that listers have had problems with
implementing the safety switch bypass on the newer models.
If there are any Seattle area listers with A15 or A16 models, I'll be
happy to check out their "safety" wiring & report back to the list.
Gawd, I love confusing people with the facts.
