I *never* ride without full gear. Temperatures here hit 40C/105F. I did, however, purchase a mesh jacket. I'm not at all convinced that it's truly protective. My next gear purchase will be full, perforated leathers. I'll pack a rain oversuit, should those rare rainy days look forboding.

I'm never really tempted not to wear my 3/4 Tourmaster Cortech, though I often wear it over only a mesh tshirt. When it's hot I untuck and open the sleeves so that wind blows up my arms, which makes even 100-degree temperatures comfortable enough. If I'm stuck in traffic, I just pretend I'm in a sauna. -Lujo

Yes, it did get a bit hot yesterday in NYC. I rode to the city to work and I felt hot whenenver I made a stop. I do not have a riding jacket yet but would look into something with a removeable liner. I do have a Abercrombie&Fitch jacket which is reversible. When worn inside out it has a cooling effect.It is a thick one though. Another thing which bothered me was the heat off of the engine on my legs when idling and stoped. So its really hot when one stops. Helmet was hot and sweaty but I belive its part of the game and I am adapting. Plus in NYC the pedestrian phenomena can actually slap u if u cut them off. By the way on Queensboro bridge if I do 55 speed, vibration makes my eyeglasses(priscription)blurry. Any remedy to that ? kfali

My advice is to get one of the new summer jackets that are like riding in a T shirt at speed but with protective padding in all the right places. I have a Fieldshear and a joe Rocket Ballistic. I like the Fieldshear better. You don't really want to fall in a tank top. I have taken a hard slide in just cut off's and running shoes. Wasn't pretty. I had the Fieldshear on the White Rim trail last week and it was approaching 104 deegrees when we got out of there. It was like riding in a T shirt when moving. Criswell KJ wrote:

My JR Ballistic isn't too bad in the heat, the hottest day here so far was in the 90s and I was fine if moving. When stopped in traffic it would get a bit toasty but not unbearable. I think we are all in agreement that it's better to sweat than to bleed. It just amazes me how many people will ride around in t shirts and shorts on a 75 degree day. That's not that hot. For me it's never too hot out to justify riding without gear. Karl A14

My first year, I was waiting for my CoolTech jacket to arrive. (Does CoolTech or VentTech even exist anymore?) I decided it was too hot for any jacket I owned at the time. A college classmate, of all people, didn't see me until I was doing my best Superman impersonation over the hood of her K car. (How does Superman land like that? There is an outfit that sells kevlar lined jeans, kevlar T-shirts, Kevlar gloves etc. which may help with the airflow versus protection problems. they are at www.dragginjeans.ca. I just bought the kevlar lined denim cargo pants, and they seem all right. Worth a look. David C

I live in the Inland Empire region of So. CA. It's regularly triple digits and above during the summer (it got up to around 99 today), and I always wear my JR overpants and Hein Gericke jacket. It's fucking miserable, but better safe than sorry... I'll probably be ordering some of that Joe Rocket mesh gear pretty soon.... -Trevor
