dry battery?

I plan to use the bike off-road, have no interest in lowering it, and so will probably be looking to sell them... Spent much of Saturday doing maintenance on the bike: - Valve adjustment - oil/filter change (spetrol synthetic 10W40) - coolant change - chain adjustment/lube (thanks to the list for the tip about double checking while on the bike) - K&N Air filter - Gave it a good dose of fuel system cleaner After buttoning it back up, I went and took the bike (barely) off-road for the first time- if you're interested I've posted some pics: http://home.earthlink.net/~rborder/dirt/dsc00095.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~rborder/dirt/dsc00095.jpg> (me and my 7yr old son, KRL650 & DS80) http://home.earthlink.net/~rborder/dirt/dsc00099.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~rborder/dirt/dsc00099.jpg> (here I am chasing him) After all the work on the bike, it seems to just be running better and better . I have discovered that I need some parts- I seem to recall one or two people on the list were parting bikes... 1) I need the choke lever assembly (mine is broke, but still works). It screws onto the bottom of the left switch unit (horn, turn-signals) with an allen key. 2) I need the "lid" for the little storage unit embedded in the rear rack (I assume it had a lid at one time) 3) I need a little metal bracket which mounts the right side "radiator cover" to the top corner of the overflow tank. And now some more questions: At the left rear of the bike, near the turn signal, is some sort of emmisions (vapor recovery) box. My bike is a '95, I don't know where it originated from. There's also a small cannister under the left side panel, just ahead of the air-box, which is connected by hose back to this box. Do I have a California bike? Can all of this stuff be, ahem, relocated to a storage box in my garage? Besides dropping a few pounds from the bike, would I see any performance change? (The air filter I pulled out was a real mess) Where does this thing injest it's fresh air from anyway, poking around, I could not find the airbox intake. Most bikes have a little storage place (often under the seat) to keep things like registration, insurance cards, maybe even some tools. Is there one on the KLR I just haven't found? Or, do most guys use the one on top of the rack (doesn't look locakable) that I seem to be missing the lid for? How the heck are you supposed to bolt the left radiator cover to the top corner of the radiator? Getting the bolt in was easy- finding a way to hold a nut back in there was another story altogether... Enough rambling for now- Ryan. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

You also need some fork boots if you're gonna be riding off-road unless you really like changing fork seals. The little compartment on the toprack is the toolbox/storage for the KLR. Damn, that statement about storing stuff in the airbox brought back memories! A friend of mine used to store his stash in his airbox. One day I was folling him through the woods, we hit a nasty bump and his exhaust changed colors and smells. Was a pretty good ride after that, until he stopped and wanted to "partake". Man, those were the days.....Has it really been over 20 years????

I think you've got a bad rectifier. Years back, a new Kawasaki unit for my A1 was $110.00. Now you also have a choice of Electrex products. You should be able to just swap it out and cure your problem. I had a similart situation on my CBR600F2 a few years ago. The maintenance free battery went completely dry, then the bike went completely dead. I was a hundred miles from home, so I removed the 'permanent' seal, added water, bump started and let it charge awhile. Then I disconnected the rectifier and ran it till it ran crappy. Repeated that cycle until I got home. A couple of notes on trickle chargers. If you're riding regularly, you can skip the charge. Also, is your trickler a 'smart' unit like a Battery Tender that only charges when the battery needs the juice, or a 'dumb' one that constantly charges at a low amperage? A constant charge won't help your electrolyte situation. Good luck, __Arden Kysely
