failed emission test
Fellow Listers...My A11 just failed AZ emissions
test...I was told the carb was running to rich, take
it home, lean it out and return for retest. The carb
was modified by previous owner...I have no clue what
was done...the only change I made was reinstalling
stock muffler. Is there a simple adjustment I can make
to past the test? I have a new main jet #148, would
this help?
TIA...

Did it fail at idle?

W.V.,
For the benefit of people who do not live in AZ tell
us about the test. Was it a simple jam the probe up
the tail pipe and take a reading at idle or was it
more complex? Did they give you any paperwork stating
carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon or any other levels? The
main jet is just one of many things that affects the
Air/Fuel ratio.

If the test is run at idle only, clean the air filter and turn the idle
mixture screw all the way in (count the number of turns so you can put
it back), then back it out 3/4 of a turn. The bike will only start with
choke, and might lean-surge on the highway. But it should run cleaner.
If it's run on a "rolling road" setup at various throttle openings you
have to rejet the entire carb.

John...Normal test is at idle with probe stuffed in
the muffler...after the first reading they asked me to
hold the rpm's at 2200 for about 1 minute...then took
another reading at idle.It passed hydrocarbons but
failed carbon monoxide big time.
I'm headed back to the garage...
Thanks

failed emission test
Devon...I removed the main jet #148 however it seems
to have been drilled out. I installed a stock #148 and
set the idle mixture at 3/4 turns out. Of course I
forgot to count the turns but I'd guess about 3. The
air filter is clean. The test is normally done at
idle, after the first reading they asked me to hold
2200 rpm's for about 1 minute and then retested at
idle. It failed carbon monoxide.I'll try again
tomorrow...
Thanks

W.V.,
Thanks for the info. If you failed CO then you are
running rich. Be careful leaning it out because you
can fail HC with an overly rich OR lean mixture).
Devon has made some great points. You may also want to
inspect/replace the spark plug and check the gap.
