nklr - tent suggestions
I'm looking for a new tent to carry on the bike, I have been using a
Predator Bivy which packs down to about 6"x18". The pack size is
about perfect, I could go longer I guess but I'm looking for a bit
more interior room. It's about 7.5'x3' and probably just under 3'
under the peak.
Any other suggestions based on real world use
Thanks
Brad

Brad:
I have two suggestions. I have tried them both.
- I used to have a bivy and, like you, wanted more space. I liked
the small pack size of the bivy as well. My solution was to buy
another slightly larger bivy to sleep in and use my old one (placed
right next to me) as storage. This worked pretty well; it kept
things dry, etc. That was yesteryear...
- Now I pack a Serria Designs three man tent with an exit and storage
area at each end. This is kinda the opposite of the small pack.
Rolled up the tent fits nicely on the seat against the luggage rack.
It gives me enough space to open a dance hall.
Both work fine, but I no longer use the bivy unless I am camping from
my pedal bike (which I really don't like to do, so that is almost
never...)

Brad, I've been using a North Face 2 man design for about 8 years, just big enough for me and my gear, Packs small and is very aerodynamic when up: it has stayed up through thunderstorms that have blown a lot of tents away, Mine is a summer model, has a lot of mesh so the fly has to go up. Ironically, it seems to trap a lot of condensation. It's not real common, but I have seen a few variants around, and everybody who uses it seems satisfied to enthusiastic. I've had a Eureka Backcountry 4 for years. It's simple to set up, storm proof (once I got the seams sealed), durable, and reasonably priced. My wife and I have used it for many camping trips throughtout the west. For bike travel, I think the smaller Backcountry 2 model would be ideal - just the right size for one person + gear. Check 'em out at www.campmor.com. I think Aerostich may sell them too. Good luck, Doug B.> Predator Bivy which packs down to about 6"x18". I just bought an REI Half Dome +2 to get into the wonderful world of free-standing tents. No more trying to pound stakes into rocks for this happy camper. I've used a Sierra Designs Flashlight for years, which is lighter and packs smaller, but you've got to stake or tie it down in six places. I've also got a Gore-Tex one-man bivy/tent that's tiny--too tiny for comfort anymore. __Arden Kysely> I'm looking for a new tent to carry on the bike...

I have two tents I use, both have "insta-set" poles, which go "Sproing" into position, and are integral with the tent. One's a Sears Hillary tent, one's from Target. For bike camping, they're ideal, every time I set it up someone asks about it. They are both pretty good in wind and rain, of course, you need to stake them down.> free-standing tents.

I use a Eureka Timberline XT 2 person. I little bulky, a little heavy, but extremely durable and strong. Doesn't cost too much either and in the unlikely event you need a replacement pole, you can usually find one at any sporting goods store. Gino> Predator Bivy which packs down to about 6"x18".
