The motor had Castrol GTX multigrade from when I purchased it in '94 until about '99 then delvac for the last remaining 25,000 miles. Eldon certainly knows more than me, I'll say that right off. I'll be happy if I know as much about my KLR as he's forgotten. BUT, with the fun I'm having so far, the only way my KLR is going to make it 90,000 miles is the hand of God reaching down and pushing it the last 40,000 miles. 90,000 is excellent, more than I expect. At that point, I believe you would have a good bit of carbon with any oil, since the valve guides and rings are simply not going to seal as well. It's time to throw in a hotter plug (band-aid for oil fouling) and ride it into the ground. Devon Conall O'Brien wrote:

first oil change

Post by Vernon, Kenny » Wed Apr 10, 2002 2:44 pm

Hey guys and gals, Getting ready to do first oil change. Any helpful hints/tips? I'm hoping to get the supplies this afternoon after work or tomorrow. Any suggestions on best oil/filters? What about any sites with helpful pics and instructions. I don't have the service manuals yet (have ordered but not received) and the owner's manual is not exactly clear on this topic. I've not looked real careful yet but I assume the drain plug is easily located or is it a hose plug type? Thanks in advance for any help. Kenny Proud A16 Rider

What out for the crappy oil filter cover, it likes to stick and doesn't like to be pryed on too much )-: I just get the frams at the autozone. As for what oil to leave I will leave that for others.......... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Are you also checking the valves at this time? I plan to check mine when I do the first oil change. On my '93, my valves never needed any adjustment in 10k miles, but I know that the chance is there of needing some adjustment. Let us know what you find. The drain is simple, and hold your mouth just right to get the filter lined up, but nothing special on the oil change. Not even going to start a thread on oil, just take the info you receive and use your best judgement. MNROn Looking forward to getting 500 miles in. Still some snow on the ground here.

I'm about to do my first oil change also, the dealer did the first one at 500 miles, and am wondering how much oil I should use? The manual says 2.6 quarts, if changing oil filter, but a buddy of mine insists that his KLR won't take much more than 2 quarts. Do I put two quarts, start it up, and then keep adding until the oil level comes up to the "high" mark? --Juan '02 KLR650 '85 K100RT '82 XL250R

I'm a newbie here too, so I'll share with ya what I've learned. Asking these guys what kind of oil they recommend is like asking a guy which issue of the Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Issue is their favorite. Opinions will vary. Keep in mind that there are Chemical Engineers on this list as well as shop mechanics and do it yourself-er's like you and me. So on the one hand, the CE can tell you the physics and chemistry behind one choice, the mechanic or road warrior will tell you "I've run my bike for 86K miles without any oil in her, ever. Just dashed a little Jack Daniels down the plug hole when I first got her and she runs like a charm." What I did was read a lot of the posts in the archive. I then looked in the "Database" link on the group homepage, and saw that they had a place for people to tell what oil they were using. So I decided based on those entries and the posts that I wanted to put Mobile 1 20W50 in my new bike since I felt like babying her for a while. The Pep Boys I went to didn't have the Mobile 1 in that weight, so I used the Valvoline fully synthetic oil instead. However, at that cost, I'm sure eventually I'll go back to using the cheaper oil. Hope that helps. Have fun, Michael

I'm not going to touch the oil issue with a ten foot pole. Ed

Kenny- Don't forget that within the old oil filter is a metal tube... This is the bypass should the oil filter become clogged. There was a rash of thrown-away bypass tubes on the list awhile ago, and now I think Fred stocks them ;) Watch out when you're tightening the oil cover bolts, they're easy to strip out. I think the FRAM part number is 6012 (check that, it might be the part number for the Concours), anyone really know the FRAM part number? The oil should be new, not the stuff you just drained from your cage ;) Personally, whatever is on sale werks for moi, though I do prefer Mobil Delvac 1300 Super... $5/gal at WallyWorld when I can get out to the burbs and buy it. Let me summarize what I've learned so far to make sure I'll be doing this right. 1. Don't throw away metal tube from old filter, needed in new filter. Easy enough. 2. Preferences on oil differ from "Orville Reddenbachers Buttery Flavored Popping Oil" to "used cage oil" to new. I'll think I'll give the new oil a shot and see how it works. Full report on this to come. Oh yeah, stick a shot of Jack Daniels in there (for the extra HP). 3. Don't pry the filter housing off with screwdriver due to possible damage. What about an impact? Nobody mentioned that. That's what I love about this list. You just don't get service like that at a dealership (Gino -- you taking notes here???). Thanks guys.
