I've been reading with interest the letters about different aftermarket
seat brands and their benefits. I know my stock seat made my tailbone go numb
at the 1 hour 45 minute mark, and long trips were courtesy of Ibuprofin.
I figured I'd buy a new seat soon, but had nothing to lose by messing
with the stock seat. I popped all the staples out, took the cover off, and
using a long sharp fillet knife, cut about 1-1.5 inches of the foam off,
keeping the general shape of the seat intact. I paid special attention to the
spot I figured my tailbone parked, knowing I might have to fine tune the mess
over time. I could have used the original seat cover but I wanted to change
the color, so I got some suitable vinyl material for $6.99 at a fabric store
and stretched and stapled the seat back together.
I lucked out, no numbness during a 3 hour ride, and I'm an inch or so
closer to the ground. Will it last? Time will tell. Its not something for
everyone but now I can spend money on something else. I'm sure others have
done this before, but that's my story!
