It don't have to be just Hardley drivers. All last summer when I was tooling around on the piston crippled baby calf, I'd wave at all other motorcyclists as I always do, and very few of them returned the courtesy. One time I was at a relatively large intersection and some rice rocket pilot was in the opposite direction of traffic. I waved and he just looked at me. Of course, on a 250 my 6'3" frame looks like a monkey screwing a football. Okay, so I wave again with bigger arm movements. He still ignores me. A double arm wave with a few jumps up and down finally gets him to tip his lid to me. I wave at everyone, including scooters. Bob Ray rode a Reflex all the way to Denali National Park in Alaska during the 2001 IBR. It ain't the fiddle, it's the fiddler. I wave at all of them, if I am not cornering or doing something where my hand could be better used. The same way I speak to everybody, (I'm just an old farm boy) and some return the courtesy and some don't. I'm not sure if it is a matter of courtesy or just the way you grew up. Of course, I had to adjust that habit when I moved to Las Vegas or any area that the density of people made it impractical to do this. Also, there are many new bikers out there and they may not know or understand this custom. Back in 1972, on my first ride it took me awhile to get used to it. I thought they were waving because they knew me. Everybody knew everybody where I grew up. But, when I traveled farther away they still waved. I thought, boy this is neat, and I been doing it ever since. brent

I must live in a friendlier section of the country. About half the guys I see riding Harleys are kind enough to wave. Of course it may be out of shock since they are probably thinking "what the hell is that?". I even rode in a poker run that had approximately 300 harleys, 2 V-Max's (my brother's and a friend of his), and 1 KLR650 (me). If you just act like you don't give a F**K what they think, they are usually pretty friendly. And, since I don't give a F**K what they think, everyone was pretty cool. Here is So Cal most riders wave, even about half the HD's . There are always the few who dont, maybe because they are watching the car about to turn left in front of them or whatever I always wave to any two wheels - hey i used to ride a scooter! The snobs are only belittling themselves - displaying their immaturity - thru their need to feel superior to others. They must not be very secure. Hey if i see a HD broken down on the side of the road maybe ill wave myself right on bye - karma! Ian
