what did you learn from your nklr yesterday?

I have a 2001 KLR650 w/ 900 miles. Since the day I got it, when the engine is cold (only), when I put it into 1st gear, the bike leaps forward and stalls. I've learned to put it into 2nd, then 1st, then go. My dealer has no clue as to the problem. After the bike is warmed up there is no problem. Also, bike is very hard to start in cold weather (under 35 degrees F.) Any suggestions on the clutch problem??? misha

I have A 2002 that does almost the same thing it lurches forward when I put it in first after I start it, but it doesn't die, it sounds like you may have a problem with one of the safety switches, neutral, sidestand ect.. As for the hard starting probably a choke adjustment, but mine doesn't like starting cold either Trevor P. A16

Clutch plates sticking together. My bike still but it doesn't stall. It's done it a few times in the past, though. I'm not sure that there's much you can do other than putting it gear and rocking it back and forth with the clutch lever pulled before starting the engine. What weight oil are you using?

The clutch problem you describe is normal and happens on bikes with wet clutches. If you blip the throttle with the clutch pulled in you will find that the plates separate and the first gear jerk is not nearly so bad. What happens is the oil is sqeezed out from between the clutch plates while it sits causing the plates to stick together somewhat. Brad Davis

What the other guys said, normal for wet clutches, no problem except your not riding enough What really bothers me is that your dealer does'nt know this, I woouldn't let anybody there touch a screw on my bike. Based on others experience w/ the shoddy service some (most) dealers now provide, I'd check out all the set up on the bike to be sure something wasn't missed or tightened properly. Cold weather, my A15 is just a couple of cranks more and a touch more of the enrichner (choke) and away. Brad

Mine stopped sticking together when I switched to Golden Spectro 4 at 22,000 miles. Never does it now.

Hard starting- my '01 starts with no trouble, so far down to 15 degF. Make sure your choke cable is adjusted properly- if it is adjusted loose, you won't be able to get full choke. You'll need full choke for starting in freezing temperatures. The clutch- what you describe is a common symptom of a wet clutch but worse on a bike that sees little use. Wet clutches will normally stick when the oil drains out, and it sits for a long time. I let the bike idle until the needle reaches at least the bottom of the temperature gauge, then I pull in the clutch and quickly rev the motor a few times. Then, shifting into first just has the normal "clunk" and doesn't jerk the bike forward. This assumes your clutch is properly adjusted in the first place. mine did that this morning and jumped forward and killed, after restart was fine. it does that sometimes. Just changed oil, now using quaker 10-40 would type of oil help this? Matthew --- RM wrote:
