Okay Okay the KLR is fast for a dual sport... how bout some stories about the most awesome hill you have climbed. You know some of those rock throwing, white knuckle, hang on and point, climbs where you are not sure if there is an other side cuz you can't see passed your front fender... personally I like the canyons of Amarillo Tx. area, especially Canyon Tx. On the first "real" off-road ride I did with my new klr I went with a few riders from the Central Coast Dual Sport group. We went on a trail known as the steps or stair steps. This is supposedly one of the hardest 4x4 trails in the area. One section, the steps, was unridable for all in this group. Getting to the steps though was filled with some amazing rock hill climbs. On several of them I was so scared I could hardly contain myself:-] One in particular was insane. Went up in second because first felt too slow. Hit a bump and front wheel was way in the air, with wheel in air hit second bump and the whole bike was now in the air!! Taking about the most amazing feeling. It felt like I was About a foot in the air but I was probably only an inch in reality. I was soo impressed with the off road abilities of my klr, I love this bike. This was done on stock tire also. I dumped the bike twice on one of the next hills and lost my nerve:-( ohwell will get it back on the next ride. Not my story but I do not think the fonz is a list member anymore. Rode the Amsterdam dual sport ride in South Georgia in 2000. Me and the fonz on KLR650s. The fonz ripped through the woods and started up a gnarly , muddy , rutted hill. I lost sight of him until I saw him rolling down the hill with the KLR in pursuit.

Where i used to ride in new jersey (the area has been closed off by the authorities since), there was a hill we used to call "pork chop hill". It was about 150-200 feet in length and roughly a 75% grade. It took me about ten tries on various trips to finally get the klr up the hill. All these tries resulted in falls, the majority apparently quite humorous when considering my friends' reactions. One in particular stands out, on a day when the dirt was hard packed, and had a fine, loose layer on top. I had the stock tires. I got about 2/3 up, and the rear spun out sideways, then caught something and got traction, throwing the bike and i, front wheel up, off the left side of the trail into the trees. To keep from tumbling down the hill, i grabbed onto a sapling with both arms. I still had my legs around the bike, and there i was, stuck waiting for help. It was funny even from my vantage point, and my friends arrived to find me laughing my a$z off. I earned the label "tree hugger" then. Another attempt around that time caused the bike to loop backwards. I was standing on the pegs, so jumped off to the right side, then fell backwards and slid down the hill on my back for what seemed like about 15 minutes. The bike landed with all its weight on the left handlebar. I have the same acerbis rally pro guards on the bike now. The guard broke a small rock and buried into the hard ground. The lever didn't break. The bars didn't bend. I've discovered that a KLR on fresh dirt knobbies at 15psi will climb some pretty amazing stuff. The trouble becomes keeping the front wheel on the ground. I've scared the crap out of myself one too many times and I generally won't tackle something unless I'm 90% sure that I'll make it. I think it's a sign of adulthood, finally.

Actually being afraid to break expensive parts is the adulthood speaking in the back of the helmet. I can't say I have ever stopped and changed air pressures for any riding conditions, since you would need to fill them back up when hitting the roads upon completion of breaking things. Nothing better than that feeling of the floating front end however. Just my $.01 worth Duden A15 Pilot
