Just rode home in first gear, after gear shift lever from my 650
'just' sheared off. No idea how/why this happened-- no evidence of
bump/scrape/sabotage (this is New York...)
Anyone else ever experience any unprovoked metal failure there?
Anyone have any suggestions about best source (local?) to get the
replacement part?
Appreciate any advice. Nick ('98 KLR650)

gear shift lever
I have a spare I got from dual-star, or maybe it was someplace else (it was
a while back). It lives in my fanny pack. The original gearshift has failed
to break despite constant provocation from trees and rocks.
The stock lever has pretty bad welding I've heard.

gear shift lever
Let me guess; it happened where the U-shaped chanel of the shift lever comes in contact with the drum on the splined shaft that runs into the case. Same thing happened to me two days after I got the bike (w/ about 2,200 miles on it). One guy said it actually happened when riding home from the dealer with his brand new one! Needless to say, the design sucks. I got mine welded (and beefed to oblivion) at a local turbo shop. Cost? A beer. I can live with that. Other options include the various aftermarket shifters. If you go that route get the stock one re-welded, stick it in your tank bag and hope never to have to use it. If you do, it's there. -Myk '99 A13> Just rode home in first gear, after gear shift lever from my 650 > 'just' sheared off. gear shift lever
Nick-
Weird! I'd get the Moose replacement. Chaparral and Dennis Kirk have
them, but Fred probably carries them too. Fred?

The Bike is a 2000 model with 11,000 kms on it. The stock chain did not break amazingly! When the wheel locked up I was sure I'd feel the chain snap and whip me in the leg or something but I guess I was lucky. I've heard bad stories about Suzuki, but I didn't know honda was the same? Adam> > Mike
