klr650 versus xr650l

Post by bc_don » Sat Jan 26, 2002 6:24 pm

Well, I've had enough of PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrom). I figure that getting a dual sport bike will allow me to extend my riding season AND do sme offroad riding. I already have street bikes that I'll use with better weather so I want something that I can ride hard and put away wet (as it were). I'll want to do some commuting (only 14 miles one way) but come nicer weather I'll want to head out to the local Fire Roads and cut lines and a bit of single track. I realize that if I "really" want to ride offroad then I should be getting an offroad bike but, I want something I can ride there, ride around with everyone else in the muck and mire (blast past the 4 wheelers) and so forth. With my research so far, folks that sell both bikes seem to agree that the Honda is a fair bit better off road. So, I need to know from folks who ride KLRs if that's the case. How is the KLR when riding a seismic line in the mountains? I like lots about the KLR (liquid cooled, larger tank, windscreen, less expensive) but I'm also a bit concerned because I've heard that (brakes are a bit weak, the bike "feels heavier", less suspension travel and a few other "nits"). So, bottom line, how is the KLR in the dirt and any other input would be appreciated. BC Don dbmartin@... '00 VFR800 (BlueBerry) '01 GL1800 (LadyBug)

It performs really well. Keep in mind that it is heavy so you're not going to manhandle it around much. That said though, I've ridden mine off-road quite a bit, rocky techinical trails, jumps, steep hills, very rutted trails etc. and it will handle it if you can ride it. Plenty of awesome power, I climbed a steep muddy hill today with no problems. My biggest suggestion is to upgrade to some better off-road tires. The stock ones, handle dry dirt, and rocky ground surprisingly well but in mud they suck. I haven't been in much sand but I hear they don't do well there either. I had mine out in some nasty mud on stock tires today and dumped it three times. :-) New tires coming for me soon. If your goal is to mimic an MX'er then you might want to go with the XR650L. But if you are going to do trail riding, then the KLR is up to it. David King

I love my KLR, but based on what you've written the XR sounds like a no-brainer. If you were a one-bike guy and needed an all-in-one bike that could commute, do the odd gravel and/or fire road AND still have the ability to tour, then the KLR would be the bike for you. But seeing as how you already have a street bike I would favor the Honda for its off-road prowess. The Honda does have a negative comfort/buzz factor at highway speeds but your short commute would probably negate this as a significant issue. Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out... Yesterday I had to endure the two hour drive to San Antonio for some more medical evaluation. I slept on the way down as my wife was kind enough to drive me. On the way back I was awake, so we stopped at a Diamond Shamrock and picked up a Cycle Trader for the area. I'm just looking around and hoping to find a steal of a deal on a 50cc bike for my son. During my reading, I found some For Sales that some of you may be interested in. So, I will share them with you and you can follow up if decide to do so 1) 1985 Honda XL350 Moose Skid Plate and Barkbusters, new piston/valve job, new tires $1575 obo 512-454-1210 or 512-680-7584 2) 1996 Kawasaki KLX 650, Cobra Exhaust $2499 409-838-4746 or 800-249-4746 3) 1997 Honda XR650L 3k miles, $3500, 972-398-6859 4) 1997 Kawasaki KLR 650 K&N Filter and Jetting, new front tire and brakes $2500 or obo 409-457-9990 5) 2000 Kawasaki KLR 650, 1600 miles, excellent condition. $4200, 713-594-6934 6) Kawasaki KLR 600, 2200 miles $1,995 (Dealer) 972-418-6565 7) 2001 Suzuki DR 400, never ridden, $3,995 (Dealer) 972-418-6565 8) 1986 Yamaha XT 350, excellent condition, 2,800 miles, kept indoors, $1,800, 713-460-1771 9) 1992 Yamaha TDM $3,600, 940-387-7524 By the way, I also found many BMW F650's for sale. A whole book of Harley's for sale. There were also a few decent deals on the Concourse and the ST1100. If anyone is interested in any of these, contact me off list and I will send you the information on them. There are a couple of FJ1100/1200 that I am going to look into myself. There were also several Suzuki Huyabusa's for sale. Guess the buyers found out that unless you are a tuck racing kind of guy, that fairing stinks. Great engine, but Suzi needs to put in a sport touring format or a standard style format. Plus, they will have to figure out how to give the bike, better leg room. Hey, I've got it, how about a GSXR1300 Huyabusa engine stuffed into a 1200S Bandit frame? Wouldn't that be sweet? If any one comes across any ads or actual 50cc bikes for sale, please let me know so I can look into them. Time to get my son on the bikes.
