The real problem with the public education system can be traced back to the federally mandated Special Education program. The original mandate stated that the Feds would pay 60% of the costs associated; last year they paid a whopping 15%. I wonder why schools struggle to make ends meet. The district I work in gets approximately $5000/student each year. This is plenty to teach standard curriculum to a student with no learning barriers or problems. We happen to have a profoundly deaf student in our district. (Communication problem, not even a learning problem) Costs add up: Full time interpreter (Not paid enough IMHO) $15-20,000 Deaf specialist $30,000+ (masters degree minimum) So it costs my district $38,000 minimum (on top of the "usual" expenses) for one special needs student. My wife is an interpreter so don't think I have a beef with the students. I'm a School Counselor and believe that Special Education is needed. The feds need to get a clue and pay what they've always said they'd pay. Jim Duluth A true believer in free education for ALL.
