stage i or stage ii?

Post by moonmaiden45 » Wed Dec 12, 2001 7:27 pm

The oem pipe on my A13 KLR650 is past tweeting and getting loud so Santa is sending me a Pro Duro road can and K&N Jet kit. I already have the K&N filter in the air box. A few questions about the carb mods.... Is this much of a big deal to install? I adjust the valves on the A13 so wrenches aren't completely foreign, but never been into a carb. Any precautions? What are realistic hp gains with the above exhaust with stageI or stage II kit? I have loved getting 48-56 mpg with the stock set-up...any changes in mileage with stage I or stage II? Finally, are there any air box mods beneficial here? Thanks much, Pat Sprague Rileyville, VA

I think people have confused "Reliable" with "No Maintainance Necessary", when the two have nothing in common. A motor that eats timing belts like clockwork at 60,000mi (with a predictably tragic meeting of Mr. Piston and Mrs. Valves) is perfectly reliable- just change the belt every 50,000mi. This example is a mid-eighties Honda Prelude BTW. Don't ask how I know. There are a lot of examples of this in racing. A "reliable" motor is one that blows up AFTER you cross the finish line. Seriously, racers think of a LOT of chassis and motor parts as simple consumables- rocker arms (any FT500 fans out there?), wheel bearings, clutches, steering bearings, rotors (never mind the pads), crank bearings, piston/ring sets etc. A lot of these are replaced on an hours-run schedule whether they are broken or not. If the balancer needs to have $17 in parts replaced every year, I can accept that. The marginal balancer design would be a lot lower maintainance if it wasn't let down by poorly manufactured, and poorly toleranced parts. The heavy service the bike is subjected to probably doesn't help. Devon A15 Brent Bacon wrote:
