I was talking with Eldon Carl the other day and he recommends; Loosen bolt 1/2 turn, tap bolt a couple of times, then torque bolt to ONLY 8 Ft. Pnds or 96 Inch Pnds of torque. Any more than this will distort the slide Clyde. He also mentioned that the only true way to verify the darn things working right is an actual visual inspection. Tom K

Hola... If you are using Eldon Carl's balancer adjustment method he also recommend's leaning the bike as far over to the right as possible (against a wall?) to reduce the chance of the "thingamajig" sliding on the shaft. Hope this help's. WVDoran Scottsdale, AZ --- Thomas J Komjathy wrote:

I am planning inspecting my adjustor on this Wednesday night. I was planning to lean the bike over far enough that I don't have to drain the oil, remove the bash plate and magneto cover, and then do the adjustment while eyeballing everything. Any suggestions? Do I need a new magneto cover gasket, or am I likely to get the original off in one piece? Thanks, Devon "W.V. Doran" wrote:

Devon, Most likely you will be able to reuse the gasket for the outer cover. If you don't take off the magneto and the inner cover, I'm not so sure you will be able to see a heck of a lot. Especially the way that the Lever, Idle Shaft sits on the Shaft. Rich in Tucson 94 KLR650 86 VFR750

I'm not sure if the gasket will hold up or not, but it should be OK if you are careful when you remove the cover. It's worth a try. Back the bolt off 1/2 turn, tap the shaft with a soft hammer a couple of times, lightly, this should be enough for the chain to self adjust. With the cover off this will all be visable. Torque the bolt at 8 ft lbs NO MORE. I adjust mine every 3k. So far so good. Good luck WVDoran Scottsdale, AZ --- Devon Jarvis wrote:

With reasonable care you should be able to reuse the gasket. The problem area is where the wiring harness sits in a rubber like insert near the countershaft sprocket. If you pull on that area you could tear the gasket. When you remove the cover think of that area as a pivot. Lift the cover up from the left and turn it keeping the right side near where it was. Have a bungee handy to hang the cover from something when it is off. There are a couple of pins that seat the cover and are not permanently attached. Be aware where they are and where they end up. I've had good luck with re-using the original gasket. Each time I take it off, I rub a thin coat of Permatex Hylomar sealant on both sides of the gasket. This is a non-hardening sealant that's easy to work with and available at auto parts stores. Pretty blue color, too - just like the pretty blue water that I used to get into trouble for playing with as a child. RM

Couldn't agree more........Hylomar is an excellent product. I used it for many years in the Automotive industry....so good in fact that Rolls Royce holds the patent to the stuff, and anything that'll stop a Brit machine from leaking.........nuf sed Frank

Yes, I broke mine. Got the replacement from Dan Oaks (www.dirtly.com). Many colors to choose from, but I chose black. -Bryan A12
