I think a fair amount will mention the Wolfman Explorer, but I didn't like what I read about it shifting from side to side from crosswinds - it is very windy here in the SF bay area. I primarily want one for the map compartment and there seemed to be issues about sun glare with the Wolfman. Has anybody come across something outstanding for the KLR? I have a tecnic tank bag that has a sloping bottom, a retaining strap that goes around the steering head, and pretty strong magnets. It has a map compartment on top and is expandable, but no side pockets. I don't like it for off-roading (though with a cargo net on top it stayed put while jumping my KLR) but it's great for trips, commuting, groceries etc. I bought it for $50 new. http://www.devonjarvisphoto.com/flying_650.jpg Hard to see, but the tankbag is on in the photo. Hi Jeff I had a luggage repair shop attach an additional strap on each side of the bag so I can secure it better. No problems after that. Great bag otherwise. VR Tom K.

Jeff- The Marsee 15L/20L Teardrop bag is first on my list when it come tankbag purchasing time. I have the Kawi tankbag which is useless for me as the map pouch is on the tank slant so points at your crotch, effectively making on-the-road navigating impossible. I looked at the Wolfman and personally, it was too big and bulky. The Marsee has a 15L and a 20L teardrop bag for slanted tanks, with four point harnesses. The material is at least 600 denier codura, I think it might be as heavy as 1000, with bigass zippers. The Wolfman felt to be made of considerably less robust material, and the zippers weren't as heavy duty as I felt the Marsee's were. I didn't like the side pockets on the Wolfman, they made the bag too wide, and the map pocket is about 1/2" too small for two sections of a folded map. The Marsee window is perfectly sized for two sections of map (yes, I did check) and has some nice features internally. Plus I think that the Marsee might be a couple bux cheaper. I did the same with my Chase Harper Eurosport still, I believe, the biggest bag around. It already had side straps at the bottom of the bag that attach to the lip of the tank. To keep it from blowing over however, you need to attach adjustable straps at the top of the bag that, in my case, hold the lip of the tank. Bogdan

Subject: [DSN_klr650] What's the best tank bag? I have the Wolfman bag and have no problems with it moving around. Rode through a cold front last week with winds up to 50mph. But I also modified the front mount. Took two female Fasteck buckles with just enough strap to put a bolt through and bolted them to the bottom of each side of the fairing. Took two longer straps with male fasteck buckles on each end and that makes the front mount. Pulls straight off the tank, forward. Can unhook at either end for gas or removal. Is very secure. Zack and I agree about Marsee. I have the Marsee 15L tankbag and it's great! You can see photos of it mounted to my bike at my website. Look specifically at "KLR thingies p.4" Keep in mind the bag is shown in the expanded mode. I ride all the time with it, on & off road. It can get a bit wobbly in the expanded mode but I rarely use it expanded. No evidence of tank scratching. Very high quality. They also sell a variety of accessories for it. You could even buy some extra mounting clips & strap material and carry it over to your other bikes. Nothing proprietary, my local True Value has the same clips that mate to the bag. Big thumbs up on this bag. I live in the Bay Area also (Hayward). I think the Wolfman is the best. It's a must have. One of the first things you should get. I have drove over the Altamont pass with my bike leaning sideways from the wind and the bag didn't really move. It does shift a "little" because it's a little top heavy and the tank isn't perfectly flat, but it doesn't interfear with driving. About 90% of the time I ride I have the bag on. I drive fast (like a crazy idiot) on East Calaveras Road (milpitas) and up San Antonio Road (San Jose) to Mt. Hamilton. Never had a problem with it.
