spark problems

I agree. It sounds like an intermittent connection to me. What a P.I.T.A. I can not imagine how the CDI unit itself could go intermittent. It should simply fail and stay dead. -- Marc Illsley Clarke, M.S.E.E., Kawasaki KLR650 A12, Loveland, Colorado, USA ----Original Message-----

spark problems

Post by Devon Jarvis » Tue Oct 30, 2001 11:24 am

I had the TCI box (similar to a CDI but controls battery'n'coil, not magneto) on my '85 XJ700 Yamaha fail, and it progressively got worse over a couple of weeks. The bike would start fine, run perfectly for an hour (at first), then start missing and die. Turn it off and on again, it would work for another hour... Eventually an hour between failures turned into 10 minutes. It would still run the bike (for a little while) when I finally replaced it, and that was the end of my problems. So don't dismiss the CDI out of hand. BUT, you need to service the electrical connections regardless and all it costs is some time and a tube of dielectric tune-up grease. A bad ground somewhere, etc... Also, having a helper to wiggle wires and connections while you check them with a multimeter helps. Analog meters work better than digital ones for spotting intermittents when you exercise the wire. Devon A15 marcclarke@... wrote:

dual sport news announcement

Post by Susan and Marshall » Thu Nov 01, 2001 12:17 am

Tobin and list, I am planning on leaving Thur. AM to relocate to New Orleans. Will be off list for at least one month. Thanks to all, even those I don't always agree with, for the great info and more fun than should be legal. I'll really miss this forum. Can't wait till the move is over and I'm back with you all. Again, thanks for everything. Marshall in Afton, Ok '95 KLXC3 "Blackhorse" (in honor of those who served)
