I was walking in Brooklyn to the 2 train, heading to work when we saw the smoke from one of the towers. I went inside a shop for my coffee, and heard everybody watching outside screaming. This was when the second plane hit. My wife and I went home, and I was watching the fire on TV when one tower collapsed. Then the other. This awful tragedy as certainly hit close to home. Just got word that my 9 year old son is okay. He attends elementary school five blocks north of the north tower of the WTC. Fortunately his mother was still at the school when the first plane struck, around 8:45am--about the same time school started. They managed to evacuate to a safe place before the buildings collapsed and covered the area in dust and debris. I still have not been able to contact them via phone, as all of the lines are either down or overwhelmed by all the traffic. But I have heard that they are okay from a friend at NYU who has a non-dail up email connection. I am trying every way to contact them, but am very grateful that they are okay. My neighborhood is in mourning. A neighbor who lives across the street has a mother and aunt who were passengers in one of the hijacked flights from Boston that hit the WTC. They had just dropped off their twins, two Boston University-bound 18 year-olds, and were on their way back to LA... We are all stunned at this dreadful news. My sister who works at Fidelity Investments in Salt Lake said that people in their NY office (located in one of the lower floors of the WTC) called Salt Lake within five minutes after the first attack. They were told by their superiors not to panic and definitely not to leave the building (which is unbelievable considering the 93 WTO bombing). Many disregarded the 'play it cool' warning and fled the building just minutes before it collapsed. There is still confusion about whether any, or how many, of the Fidelity employees stayed in the building. As this terrible story unfolds I am shocked and appalled at the magnitude and implications of this terrorist attack on the US. Glad to hear your loved ones are OK, Mark. It sounds like the school you're describing is P.S. 234 on Greenwich Street right by Chambers -- I used to live kinda kiddy-corner from that school, but had to move out when my land lord decided to sell the apartment. Now I'm almost relieved that happened. I can't beleive this. I can only hope that people I've worked with downtown and former neighbors are OK. I heard that major debris was strewn at least a few blocks north of that intersection. I'm in a sublet right now up in the low 20s on the West side. Down by Chelsea piers there used to be a view of WTC, so this morning I had walked down to take a look from a distance. Not long after I started to walk I heard news come over the portable radio I had that the South tower had fallen (which was REALLY hard to believe!). When I got down there I could see the remaining (north) tower with lots of visible flames and what seemed to be a large hole where the plane had hit. Probably 15 or 20 minutes after I got down there, that tower collapsed upon itself. All I could do was stand there with my mouth open, shaking my head in disbelief... Such large scale destruction right in front of you is enough to shake anyone up. On my way down there, & as I stood watching, emergency vehicles were flying downtown to assist, including a pick-up truck piled full of FDNY fire fighters who had probably been off duty when the incident happened. One of the main things I was horrified by was that, in addition to the innocent people who live near there & work in offices down there (who hopefully evacuated before the collapses), SO MANY emregency workers HAD to have been REALLY close when either of those tremendously tall buildings came crashing down. I heard within the last hour or two that the fire dept expects that they've lost whole companies and that there may be as many 200 fire fighters lost (there were also many EMTs & cops lost)! THIS SUCKS!!! In addition to all of the regular/innocent folks (including people from Mark's sister's company) DEFINITELY include all the civil servants who've laid down their lives in the line of duty in your prayers. Bill Lewis -- broke but safe in NY -- at this point being broke is a petty/trivial problem compared to what went down today!
