balancer upgrade for '89

I've got the usual engine balancer problem on my '89 with the whacking noise and the springs in the sump. I've looked at buykawasaki.com parts diagrams and there is a difference in the '97 and '89 balancer parts. Both year diagrams show spring loaded sprockets. The '97 only gives a single part number for each balancer/sprocket assembly whereas the '89 gives part numbers for every spring and pin. The '97 numbers don't quite match up with the '97 diagram either. Anyone know if the '97 still uses springs? The diagram shows springs but the parts list doesn't. Anyone tried upgrading a pre-'97 with '97+ parts? It looks like only two parts will replace the two failing sprocket assemblies on the '89. The '97 part numbers are- 12046-1165 Sprocket, balancer, 18T 13164-1007 Balancer-comp, fr, lh Shafts and spacers are all pretty much the same so it looks like these parts will retrofit. Will they? Are they spring-loaded or solid? If they are spring-loaded are they more durable than the '89? -rc

Am interested in the answer to this one too. Mike Cowlishaw at Eagle Machine sent me solid balancer upgrades for my '95, but no installation instructions. Are these instructions online anywhere? Todd A3 A9

I did the upgrade and followed Eden Carl's advice on what to change; here goes: 13168 1238 lever $4.31 13168 1436 lever, idler shaft $5.84 670B1507 (the B might be an 8) O ring, 7mm $1.02 92150 1923 bolt, idler lever $9.50 92200 1263 washer $1.55 92144 1860 spring, idler shaft $3.31 92002 1693 magneto flywheel bolt $10.22 You'll need these special tools: 57001 1184 holder, rotor $16.43 22mm, 1.5 mm pitch puller after-market 6 or 7 bucks You may need: 11060 A gasket $12.80 11060 B gasket $12.80 As far as I know (I can only go by what the parts people can see on their M F, checked twice) the sprocket internals didn't change post 96. If you want solid inserts ( I did ) call Mike Cowlishaw, Eagle Mfg. 619 479 0123 about $50. Good Luck, Bogdan

You have to take the magneto out and the sprockets off. One of the inserts has a mark (dot I believe) but I don't remember what sprocket that signifies. Ask Mike. I'll send you Rex H's write-up that has a lot of the info in it. Bogdan

Just called and got mail order prices. $122 for both. Even if they are solid I'm going with the Eagle Mfg. shims ($60). Also priced the balancer chain. $210!! I may leave the old one in for another 20k miles unless it's obviously gone. This is an '89 after all. -rc

Now I get it. You're going whole hog and thinking of changing the chains as well as the tensioner up-grade. I don't remember what I sent you. I'll send you Rex's write up on the chain change we did on my bike. Bogdan

Some of us have used a Canadian connection and got the chains for 33-50% less. Bogdan

Tracey's said the list price was over $250. $210 was with a discount. I've got two '89 motors, both with ~20-30k miles. Both motors could use the balancer sprocket repair. I bought the second motor and installed it before I knew what the knocking sound was from the first one was. The second one made it too. Doh! Now I'm planning on fixing the balancer sprockets in the first motor, along with the clutch springs and water pump seal. At that point I may or may not do anything with the second motor. This '89 only has 27k miles showing on the clock but it is no spring chicken. In a nother year or three I'm likely to sell it off for '96) example. -rc PS. Does anyone remember where to get shims for the countershaft sprocket so it doesn't wobble and chew up the countershaft splines?

This would be a good time to go get your KLR stuck axle-deep in old wet snow. You'll get the blood warmed up in no time.
