Ron Major died while participating in the 1997 Iron Butt Rally. Your story isn't quite correct. He did die of a heart attack and fell off his bike. He was found within a few hours but after taking his body away, the authorities on site did not immediately transport his bike. They left it beside the guard rail where later rally participants found it, but not him. The authorities would not release information about him until his family had been notified. Thus for a couple of days, neither the rally staff, participants nor the rest of the world had any information. Hi, I'm Leon Begeman. I don't have a KLR650 yet, I'm considering getting one to replace my ZX6, after riding it to Prudhoe Bay in July, I find that it isn't a very good Iron Butt type long-distance bike. I think perhaps the KLR might be a better choice. My other bikes include a couple of Ninja 250s. For Iron Butt rides they require too much maintenance and they aren't sturdy enough for gravel roads. It was the '97 Iron Butt and it was Ron Major. But what does any of this have to do with a anyone of us having a heart attack?!?! It can happen any time - any place to any of us..... on a MC, in a cage or in our sleep. BTW, the Iron Butt is NOT a race - it has nothing to do with speed. i agree with these sentiments. i find it hard sometimes to explain to non-riders why i love to ride and ride so much. yeah, it's dangerous, and you should expect to crash if you do it enough. simply put, i love it. however, i've gotta say that 600-700 miles in a day has been about enough for me. i get pretty uncomfortable after that long in the saddle. i just want to stop riding and do something (anything) else. people experience life differently.
