It looks like the red/white is what feeds the parking light. I think you can disconnect it from the ignition switch and tie it to the red, which is the supply wire for the instrument panel lights. Study this carefully, since I'm probably wrong... RM>Looking at the wiring diagram it doesn't look that easy. Everything >is tied together. I still havn't heard a solution.

You can't disconnect it because it connexion is internal to the ignition
switch ...the same wire is used to power this light under the run position
of the switch.
Anyway i'm sure this can not happen more than one time to let the
ignition key to this position unless you're drunk

Looks like if I disconnect the R/W wire I lose running lights when ignition is on or off. The R wire supplies the R/W when ignition is on. I'm beginning to believe there is no solution. No one has come forward and the archives show nothing. The solution is to not leave the switch in "park". Sounds trite, but I have
not done this more than once in 50,000mi of riding.
I do have the habit of looking back at my bike when I park it, not because I'm
obsessed (my wife's word) but to see if the taillight's on and if I dropped
anythin, or forgot the cable lock.
It's a testament to the KLR's general low-maintainance setup that you even
have time to worry about this.
My solution, which I will not bother installing on my own bike, is a relay,
switching the power to the tail/brake lights, powered by the headlight
circuit. That way the tailight can't be on unless the headlight circuit is
powered.

OK then, try this. Power the taillamp with the brown. Hook it up however you like. The brown is the main power feed (switched) for much of the bike. This will cause the lamp to be fused via the main fuse instead of the headlamp fuse. If this bothers you then give the new taillamp circuit its own fuse. To SAFELY disable the parking light feature:
1) Disconnect the RED/WHITE wire from the "wiring harness" side of
the 6-wire connector that goes to the ignition switch.
2) Attach this disconnected RED/WHITE wire end to the solid RED
wire (on the wiring harness side) at this 6-wire connector.
The tailight will only be lit when the ignition switch is in the
ON position. Any accessories that are powered by the unused
BROWN/WHITE "Euro" light wire will NOT be powered when the
ignition switch is in the PARK position.
The RED wire that goes to the ignition switch is fused by the
10 amp headlight fuse. The 20 amp MAIN fuse supplies power to all
circuits on the KLR (including the headlight fuse), except for the cooling system fan & the ignition system.

Or..... since we know about the parking light key switch design flaw,
we could just be more careful when removing the key. Seems like a
simple solution.

Of course. The problem then is that there will be no Parking light option. Thanks for the suggestion. -Jim _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp>From: Devon Jarvis >Subject: Re: [DSN_klr650] Re: Stupid Parking Lights >Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 23:11:53 -0400 > >My solution, which I will not bother installing on my own bike, is a relay, >switching the power to the tail/brake lights, powered by the headlight >circuit. Yes it is, especialy when it's just you with gear on running your ass off and tring to jump on (when you 5'5") and get enough downward momentum to make the tire stick while letting off the clutch.. #3. The correct amount of links is 106. That includes at master clip. The
D.I.D. "X" style fold colored chain is just new technology that most
chainmakers have adopted. I can't give you a pro/con because I have only had
mine on for a couple months. Works fine so far.
#5 If you are removing the swingarm, then yes the stock chain will come off.
If you don't feel like going that far you can use a chain breaker, or like
me, you can use a hand grinder to remove the rivet head, then drive it
through with a drift punch. The new chain will not come fixed together if you
get one with a master link, and by the way, get two master link sets. You may
or may not find out why.
One piece chains are usually considered stronger because there isn't any one
spot of weakness. Of course, with a master link chain the weakness is in the
assembly of the master link itself. If done properly you should get the same,
or better, service life out of your master link chain.
#4 Have never done it, can't help you there.
Hey, RM check out the ride across the tops of the Los Padres Mountains
directly east of Santa Barbara, they are great. Also check out Rock Creek
Ranch east of Santa Maria on the 166. I think its like 15 miles out. The
ranch is on the left hand side of the road. If you turn into the entrance you
will see two roads. One goes to the ranch, the left one goes to a riding area.
Have fun
