klr-ism???

Post by djames@escape.ca » Wed Aug 15, 2001 8:56 pm

Last weekend I encountered my first instance of being denied a service due to my riding a KLR. I was out for a ride and came across a campground that I had not been to yet, so I pull in and ride up to the office. "I would like some information on your rates and would like to ride through the campground to see what the sites are like" I inquire. "No problem, but "dirt bikes" are not allowed on the campground" the man tells me. I am taken back by this reply. I ask him if other types of bikes are allowed and he says yes, no problem- I can take a Harley into the site. I explain that my bike is fully licensed and is in fact quieter than most bikes. I ask him why "dirt bikes" are not allowed- he says that they don't like the looks of them. At this point I have no interest in pursuing the matter, and I thank him and leave. The whole thing really bugged me- maybe he just did not want me in the campground (it was about 80 degrees and I was fully decked out in riding jacket/pants/boots and I am 6ft 7in tall....) I almost to the point of writing him a letter asking if I would be allowed to visit with my 4X4 truck (hey, it could be driven in the dirt too..) or if they would allow my black friend in... Or asking if I would be allowed on the premises if I brought a cover for the bike, turned off the bike at the entrance to the park, covered the bike (so that the women and children would not faint from the fearsome sight of the Green Beast). Anyway- sorry for the rant. I was wondering if anyone else has come across anything similar?

Camping has always been a means to an end for me. I took the KLR650 one year. As I was removing the bike from the trailer, a ranger approched me and informed me that dirt bikes wern't allow to ride in this area. I asked him if licenced vehicles could, and he replyed 'yes, of course'. I showed him the license plate and my regestration. He said, Well, OK, but wasn't too happy about the situation. To heck with him, I rode anyway. As a side note, I had told my wife that I would take her on some of the backroads, ended up riding the entire time there with her on the back. In Haines Alaska my wife and I were not welcome at a campground because we were on bikes (two BMW K - RT's even). Their loss, our gain, we found much better refuge in a place just past the ferry terminal - can't remember the name, but it had a great view of the bay. They were friendly and accomodating to our needs. -Jim

I'd just tell this guy, "Pull your head out of your ass pal... it's NOT a dirt bike; realize it and get over it." Then ride around the place for awhile to get his blood pressure up a bit and eventually leave 'cause I certainly wouldn't want such a dumbass to separate me from my money. Mark B2 A2 A3

I was refused a room in Hurricane, Utah because I was on a motorcycle (KLR). I ended up riding into St. George and found a motel where they welcomed me and suggested I park the bike on the sidewalk next to my room. I also came across a campground near Shasta where the sign just said "No Motorcycles". I rode to Weaverville and found a motel that put out the welcome mat for me and the Gold Wing. Either they like us or they don't. Let's be sure to publish the names of both kinds of establishments so we can patronize our friends and shun our enemies. One thing we can do to assure that our friends remain our friends is not to use the motel towels for cleaning our bikes. Ask at the desk and most places will supply you with rags. __Arden Kysely A11 "Mr. K"

I know that one reason hotels/motels don't like bike is because bikers often use the hotel towels to clean their motorcycle. Or so I have heard... The reason I know this is I stopped at a hotel and the owner gave me some old towels to use if I wanted to clean the bike. He told me the guy that owned the place before him refused bikes due to the uncleanable hotel towels that were left behind (or stolen).

I've been denied access to a couple campgrounds because I was on a motorcycle. I always thought that perhaps the owners had trouble in the past with loud hell raisin Harley types (sorry guys) and just shut the place down to all motorcycles. I've never been denied a motel room because I was on a bike...though one never knows the real reason why you are denied a room. I have been denied a ground floor room on several occasions. Seems motel owners are fed up with people bringing motorcycles into rooms. -----Original Message----- From: IronJungle@... When traveling, why would you want a clean bike? It's just gonna get dirty again. Why waste the time? Gino
