Recently, I was adventure touring near Steens Mtn. in Eastern Oregon. One
morning I went to start my Y2K KLR 650, and much to my dismay, nothing
happened. Not even so much as a click. After about an hour of trouble
shooting, a I shifted it in to 2nd gear and rocked it back and forth and
voila', it started. Since then, I have stopped and started it about 30 or 40
times with no problems until today when it did the same thing. Rocking it
back and forth in 2nd gear got it going again.
Has any one else out there had this problem? Any suggestions for a fix? Your
comments would be welcomed.

klr650 electric starter mystery
I too had this problem with my new A15. I happened to
be away from home and tried everything including push
starting. That was a joke. The tire would skid in
first gear and the taller gears wouldn't turn the
engine over enough. Even if it did I'm not sure if
what ever was wrong with the bike would allow it to
start anyway. Just about the time I was ready to give
up it mysteriously started. I went home and took a
look at the shop manual to determine where the
interlocks were and saw that there was on the
kickstand. I bypassed this interlock (normally open
switch with stand down)by cutting both wires and
soldering them together. Ok.. I'll risk taking off
with the stand down. I have not had the problem since
I made this mod. Now... One time after the episode
I thought I had the same problem - pressed the starter
and nothing. I discovered I had the clutch lever
pulled in, something I have been accustomed to doing
when starting bikes regardless if in neutral or not.
You can't do this on the KLR. Now I am wondering if
this is why it didn't start the first time it happened
to me. Perhaps I spaced out and was trying to start
it with the clutch lever pulled in. I'm not sure why
Kawasaki adds the interlock to the clutch lever.
Perhaps the compression release is interlocked to the
neutral position - just haven't taken a look yet.
Bottom line.... Make sure you don't have the clutch
lever pulled in.

klr650 electric starter mystery
The dead silence is the vital clue. Clutch lever ignition lockout switch or sidestand ignition lockout switch. Disable both.
