schofield & taylor pass report (colorado)& tomichi & hancock p

Post by jimnes@satx.rr.com » Mon Aug 13, 2001 9:26 pm

Steve, sounds like you had a hell of a ride. My son and I just got back from our trip to Colorado. We both live in Texas. My son lives in Dallas and I live in San Antonio. We didn't feel like driving across the desert in August on the KLRs (we each have A15s), so we trailered to Salida and traveled from there on the bikes. The object of our trip was not to blast through Colorado. We wanted to fish and camp. Over a week period we fished and camped from south of Gunnison, then up to Taylor lake, over to Tincup Pass, down Chalk Creek and back to Salida. The afternoon thunder showers kept things interesting so we hid out at a B&B in Salida for a couple of days, making short trips, then on the last day, August 2nd, we went back toward Gunnison on Hwy 50 and up to Tomichi Pass and over to Hancock pass and down to St Elmo again. It was a great week. Both of the KLRs worked like a champ even though we were loaded down with camping gear, fishing gear including waders and wading boots and my bike had the added disadvantage of hauling my 260 lb. frame around. The only problem we had was with my son's bike on the last day when he started having a problem getting into first gear. I couldn't believe the punishment the bikes took going over those rocks. Like you said, the scenery was fantastic. There is no room on the group's files server so I can't put up any pictures there. Maybe I can get my web page going and put up some there. The fishing was great too. Even though the rainbows were non- existent due to whirling disease, the browns and cutthroat were plentiful. On the last day my Magellan 315 GPS bit the dust. I don't blame it. The vibration over those rocks was really bad. It was still under warranty so I have a new one but I will have to figure a better way to mount it. One morning while camped at above 10,000 ft near a tiny meadow steam, full of trout, we got out of the tent and, while fixing grits and pancakes (a traditional Texas breakfast) we watched two cow elk feed into the meadow about 100yds away. Then, in the other direction, a bobcat (or a lynx, we didn't have any binoculars, but it was a big cat with a bobbed tail) sauntered out of the trees and down across the stream about 50 yds away. He watched us for a while then went back up the other side into the trees. On the drive back to Texas we must have passed literally hundreds of riders headed to Sturgis. I was thankful by then that I was sitting in my air conditioned pickup drinking 40 oz cokes and listening to Larry the Cable Guy on the CD player. It was a fantastic vacation, maybe not on the same scale as a trip to Alaska or Ushuaia, but a great one for guys like us who have to go back to work on Monday morning. Jim & Keith Nesrsta

Seem to me that NKLR is just reads as an abbreviation for NUCLEAR, defined as those topics most likely to set people off. Todd A3 A9
