If you're talking about dirt riding on a KLR, maybe that's just a little exercise where "you get a little isometric exercise dirt riding". But if you're riding off road goat trails on a regular dirt bike, at anything faster then walking speed, your are getting a serious work out. Motorcross riders are considered some of the most physically fit athletes in the world. Yeah, I know, we're not riding motocross here, but if you're out pushing it in the dirt, you are working your entire body, both aerobically and strength wise (whatever that's called). I've been involved in all kinds of sports over the years (football, rugby, bicycle riding -both road and mtn), and the kind of trail riding I'm doing now is easily as demanding as any sport I've done. I'm usually so exhausted after a trail ride, its all I can do make it through the next 2 days, can't hardly raise my arms above my head to shampoo, and walking is a chore. I think its a great way to exercise, if only I could do it regularly. :^) And I'm not saying mtn bikes are not a great workout, they are, but so is a serious trail ride. Ed-trying to stay in shape by trail riding as much as possible-Boyd

[snip] I know that there must be something going on when I ride off-road. The couple times I went off-road back in Feb/Mar I was looking for places to stash the layers of clothing that I had to peel off. I'd end up way underdressed for 40F weather and would feel fine. I still think that the pedalbike is more of a workout FOR ME. I don't ride the KLR aggressively enough to keep the exercise aerobic. RM

Ed, you are right that trail riding can be a real workout. Unfortunately, it's mostly an anaerobic workout. That's good for strength training but it pounds your body to pulp and you are sore for days. This is not anyway to train. In fact, you wind up farther behind because you can't heal fast enough to get enough riding in to improve your overall fitness. Bicycling, however, does not beat the body to a pulp(assuming you're not hitting trees) and it is more aerobic than anaerobic so you can do it everyday and build gradually without as much (or any if you do it right) soreness. So the net benefit to cycling, in terms fitness, is greater than motorized cycling, by far. Don't get wrong, I love may KLR!!! Just gotta ride my bicycle before I can ride the KLR. Otherwise, I feel guilty as hell. Oh, and the other benefit is speed or lack there of. The chances of getting splattered on my bicycle greatly reduced. Although the assholes are still out there ready to run you over. - Rob Duvall Ed wrote:

the trail riding my friends and i do (or, i guess used to do, since i've moved...) back east, snaking FAST through gnarly single track trails between trees, up/down steep hills, etc., every sunday, sure felt like a workout. it also was definitely easier to do if you stayed in practice. yeah, you were tired and sore the next day. be that as it may, it doesn't seem to have done much to make an 1.5 hr mtn bike ride any easier for me. it does provide some exercise, primarily isometric, very little aerobic. certainly not a "serious workout".

You forgot to mention the added benefit of penile numbness and ultimately impotence in some cases. Shouldn't be as much of a problem on mtn bikes if you stand a lot but with road bikes it can be a problem for some. New seats are available but I haven't heard how well they work. Hmmm. Do you mean not enough of an aerobic exercise, like running or biking? The riding I've been doing is plenty aerobic, I mean, I'm panting half the time. I'm talking serious heavy breathing (I know its sad when the the only heavy breathing you do is when you're riding a motorcycle, but you have to take it where you can get it). But I agree, trail riding doesn't give you a focused work out, but for me its a great one. It reminds me of full court basketball, where you get serious aerobic exercize, you sharpen your reflexes, and if you are hitting the boards hard and all the other bodies around you, you'd get a decent strength work out too. And as an added benefit at my age you get broken noses, beat up knees, and twisted ankles, its brutal. :^) And I think if you're training for a particular sport, that doing that sport helps your conditioning for it, I guess that's the way I look at it. In my case its a great work out. But I see your point about conditioning in general, a bike is a great way to get in shape for trail riding, and I do some mtn biking riding myself and find it really hels. But I prefer to just fire up the KLX and go off bouncing down the trail. Ed

Perhaps we have a different view of what a serious workout is. Do you mean serious 'you're not allowed to have fun' serious? In that case I guess I'd have to agree with you. I definetly wouldn't classify my trail rides as serious workouts. If you mean serious as 'real hard workout that challenges you aerobically and strength wise', well I guess we have a different idea of what defines a serious workout. For me, any workout that is 1/2 hour or more where I'm breathing at a seriously elevated rate, heart is pumping at an elevated rate, where I am working my muscles till they're burning and they feel like they won't respond anymore, is a serious workout. The trail rides I usually go on are about 3-6 hours in the saddle, 4 to 10 hour days). Usually within 5 minutes I'm breathing heavy, and it stays at a sustained rate as long as I'm in the saddle. Add in the heavy muscular exertion like heavy lifting bikes over logs, muscling a bike around tight spots, yanking on the handle bars, pushing off, picking up my bike (happens too much) and that adds up to one serious workout - for me. Now I know I'm not in the best shape, but when I can barely pull the clutch in another time, and I'm having trouble modulating the clutch at the end of a long ride, and I'm having trouble staying standing up over the saddle because of exhaustion, I'd say that's a serious workout. Am I the only one that comes off a trail ride wiped out? Ed-not trying to look like joe tough guy trail rider, joe out of shape trail rider perhaps-Boyd
