members vs active listers
Has anyone else noticed that we are supposed to have 1482 members in
our group, yet we hear from probably less than 100 members in the
daily writing. What's up with this? Do we actually have 1300 people
just listening in? I just thought the numbers looked curious and
wondered if anyone else noticed this, or If I missed the boat to a
new location. Mentally, well, that ship left a long time ago, but I
thought I was pretty up on what is currently being talked about. Have
we perhaps lost that many active members? Could the day to day
discussions have become such dull and predictable rederick, that we
actually lost that many members? Waaaaaaaas suppp listers? Are we
here or are we not?

Jim,
The old 80/20 rule again, ha! 80% of the discussions by 20% of the list.
Happens in a lot of things in life. Just my .02 worth.

As a not-very-active lister, I can give you one perspective. I ordinarily
delete 90-95% of the list e-mail unread because it is mostly just social
chatter. I don't ride to socialize, and I don't subscribe to the list to
socialize. If I think I can contribute something to the list, I'll post a
message or send one directly to another lister; these occasions are rare
because a) in 14 years of riding a KLR I've hardly had any problems worth
mentioning, and b) I don't tinker with and customize my bike just for the
fun of it. In addition, very occasionally I'll post a wise-ass comment
mostly for my own amusement.
Your reference to "daily writing" carries a subtle implication that all list
members should post every day, or at least very frequently. I don't agree,
of course. In fact, if any large fraction of the 1400+ members posted every
day, and the posts were of the same nature as most of those we have now, the
volume of message traffic would be unbearable, and I'd be out of here.

Hey all,
I don't know if I get counted or not as I have the list bookmarked and
look up the messages daily as opposed to getting them sent to me, but
out of all the messages posted every day, it does often seem that less
than 20% are actually useful/informative etc. as opposed to, for
example, the message that I am directly responding to right now (not to
start anything...). There are simply too many messages to wade through
daily. Unless the title specifically mentions something of interest, I
don't bother even opening the message. I tend to look at the list as a
way of gaining knowledge to remember at a later (when needed) date. At
this point I am not able to contribute much info having had my '96 less
than a year, but I know the info I am gleaning will come in handy on
occasion. But yes, it sure would be easier/more manageable if a lot of
the random comments didn't get posted. For example, I also belong to
the Audi S-Car List, it gets maybe 30-40 posts on an average day and in
the last year some of the more technically inclined folk have set up a
separate more technical list as they got fed up with irrelevant pissing
contests etc. This is a bummer as a lot of general knowledge/help was
lost to the original list and I now have to check both lists to see
everything (but in the end don't get as amny answers to to the more
mundane issues as the original list doesn't have as much knowledge and
the new one is REALLY technically oriented and doesn't tolerate the
more mundane stuff).
Just my .02
