I am soon to be the owner of a used 2000 KLR 650. Plan to get it next weekend. I can hardly wait. I'm thinking of getting a Wolfman Explorer tank bag. Do any of you have experience with this bag? How's the quality? Does it fit well? Can you fuel without removing the bag? How easy does the bag come off? I'd appreciate any feedback you have. Mike 00 KLR 650 (soon) 99 Nomad

Just picked up one myself. Have not had a chance to use it (or install it) yet. It's a quality bag, you may find it a little on the large side. It attaches to the bike via four straps you attach to the bike. The straps have QR buckles that connect to to straps on the bag. It covers up the gas cap, so you'll have to detach it for fueling, at least at two points. However that looks easy to do with the QR buckles. - Brian

I have had my Wolfman Explorer bag for about six months now. The Wolfman Explorer tank bag attaches to the motorcycle via four FasTex buckles. The quality is excellent. The bag fits very well, and the map is level with the bag mounted on my KLR650's tank. To fuel, you simply release the two front buckles and lay the tank bag (still attached by the two rear buckles) onto the seat. After fueling, you simply re-attach the the front two buckles and you are on your way. It takes me about 5 seconds to release the two front buckles for fueling and about 10 seconds to reattach them and to re-tighten the tension on the front straps after rueling. The bag comes completely off if you remove all four buckles, a task which takes me approximately 10 seconds. -- Marc, KLR650 A12, Loveland, Colorado, USA

* The map pocket needs to be about .5" wider and .5" taller if you want to use the original crease lines of your maps. I'm slowly destroying mine shoving them into this window. * It's a little large. I'd suggest removing the side pouches unless you really need them. * For mounting the rear, I chose the two downtubes instead of the seat rails. They are further apart and anchor the bag better. * Could it have killed them to make the goddamn map window a little larger? * For mounting the front, I chose the coolant tank support bracket on the right side (right next to the horn) and the mounting "tab" welded to the tank on the left side (the one that holds the top of the radiator shroud panel). Twist up the webbing, wrap it around, and reinstall the shroud with a fender washer under the screw. No, it's not pretty. * A larger map window would be nice. RM

Richard: LOL! The map window is also the only complaint I have with the Wolfman Explorer after two years of use. Tim's Radiator Guard makes installation of the left front mounting point much easier. John

Richard- I had a chance to look at a Marsee 15 L teardrop tank bag today at Bob's Bikes Made Weird. I have seen both the Wolfman and the Marsee up close, but I don't own either, so I have no practical experience. From what I have seen, I would buy the Marsee in a hearbeat. The bag is made from a Cordura which feels about twice as heavy as the Explorer. It has no side pockets on it (+/- depending on you POV, but from what I've seen of a mounted Explorer the side pockets get in the way) but does have an optional detachable rear pouch with belt clips on it. The zippers are extremely heavy duty, the same gauge as the main zippers on my Roadcrafter (yes, I did actually compare them ;), and the expansion sleeve has X-ed bungie cord running around the sleeve so that you can cinch your load down. The map pocket will hold two map sections (i.e. W:7.5"x H:8.75" total) flat, though due to the slight overall taper of the bag, I had to fold the map section in half first to insert it, then unfolded it inside the pocket. It also has another map pocket under the map window for storing more maps/documents. The map window has a velco tab closure that also serves as an attachment point for a small driver licence zippered pouch. The top flap also has elastic loops for pens, tire guages etc. The only thing I didn't see was the fastening system... Bob's only had the magnetic bags, but I will be headed back in two weeks when they recieved the strap mounted version. I think their website is http://www.marseeproducts.com/ Like I said, I haven't actually used either bag, so take this at face value, but after giving both through inspections, the Marsee wins my credit card... They're about the same price ($120) if anyone is wondering. Zack

wolfman explorer tank bag

Post by Rich Kickbush » Sat Jun 09, 2001 11:06 pm

Hey Zack, Nice find, but is this a 3 point harness system? Seems to me if it can accept their backpack conversion as shown on their website, it must be. This just doesn't work on a dual sport like the KLR when you're bouncing around loaded up, at least in my experience. Keep us posted on what you find out... I've been using a Touratech universal dual sport tank bag for the last six months, its not the perfect tankbag, I don't know if that exists yet, but it has an interesting approach it has a four point base that stays strapped to your tank, and the bag zips on and off. The only hassle is lining up the zipper to get it started each time, then its an easy zip on/ zip off. Its stiff, expandable, probably a 1000 denier as well, good size map pocket takes letter size maps without folding. The zipper on the base has started to come away from the base, but hasn't got any worse. Stays in place something stupid, with no cinching down. Like I said, you have to get used to the zipper, and its always going to be a bit of a pain, but it gets easier, and is probably even quicker than 4 fastex buckles. A non-removable base is not compatible with Aerostich panniers though, or not that I've been able to come up with. FWIW Rich

today --------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Martin owns 2 Marsee Teardrop tankbags, and recomends them over Wolfman Explorer and BMW bags. You will find his observations on them in post #18224 I'm leaning toward the 10 or 15 litre Teardrop. GO in MI
