stalling in the rain!

Post by landrev@dsuper.net » Thu Jul 12, 2001 9:46 pm

I was ridind on highway 40 near Montreal, Quebec tuesday evening in the worst nightmare conditions I ever experienced (very heavy rain & wind, hail, lightnings, heavy traffic with a lot of vans etc) when the engine began to hesitate (same as when you must switch to reserve). It finally stalled, but not completely. When I pulled on the side, it was running idle, but I could'nt rev up and go for a while. What is the problem with that bike?. Is it normal for a solid bike like the KLR to stall when it rains? Can I correct the problem or I'll have to ride in dry conditions only with my lovely green locomotive?. Luc A14, 6500 mi.

My A15 would hesitate in heavy rain, though I could whack the throttle wide open and after a cough it would pull cleanly. A few more minutes of steady throttle, and it would repeat it. There is an article on the files page about the "T-mod", basically installing a T fitting into the carburetor vent hose, and running an additional line up under the seat away from the rain. This solved the problem on my bike. 50 cents in parts, and 30 min. If you let the motor cool, you can reach past the exhaust pipe from the right side, and install it without removing the tank. Sidecovers and seat have to come off though. Be careful not to kink a hose, and make sure the hoses are away from the exhaust pipe. Devon A15 78 SR500 81 SR500 landrev@... wrote:

If it was cold that day, like 5 C or something, you could have experienced carb icing. The thing wont idle at all. It runs ok once you are going on slightly higher revs but lower revs it just dies. I ride my klx all year round here in Dublin and the winter is a pain. Carb icing more times that I can count to I think. Claes, a swede in Dublin. -----Original Message----- From: landrev@... It's summer here in Montreal. It has been cold lately but not 5C. If that ever happens, I'm following the rest of my Canadian brothers and heading to Florida.
