01 KLR - 100 miles into vacation trip, all was well when suddenly it would not idle. giving lots of throttle it would kick in, chocking would kill it immediately unlike the vent tube problem which I have solved thanks to archives. Starting would require long turnover with throttle wide open. It runs at highway speeds just fine. Changed gas, drained carb bowl, flushed system, new spark plug. With bowl empty, engine turned over and refilled again, it would idle fine for about 30 sec then sputter a few times then quit again. Am I looking at messing with the carb? Ignition problem? Out of simple things to do. Thanks guys - Rod (on vacation and pissed, facing a long honeydooooooooooo list if I can't escape).

Sounds like you either have a sticking choke or crap in the float bowl, pull the bowl and check for debris, drill out the cap and pull the low speed screw and check for garbage in there, then maybe pull out the jets and make sure they are clean. Its running wide open probably makes it a low speed circuit problem. John Get it fixed and enjoy your vacation!

I had the same problem with mine, I took the float off and the needle and flushed it real good with carb cleaner, I also bent down the little float adjustment tab thinking that maybe the float level was to high. Well it seemed to fix the flooding problem but if I idle for more that about 45 seconds or so it will start to flood. It runs godd other than that. I'm pretty sure this is because I for one think I bent tab for the float height in the wrong direction, and #2, I probably didn't need to bend it at all. For now until I get the float bowl off again I just turn the gas off when I come to stoplights and what not and that works for a temp fix. You might want to try emptying the bowl then turn the gas on just enough to fill it about half full, then off again to see if it has the same probs, if it doesn't flood out your float is maybe set to high. Just one thing for you to look at, sorry this was so long.. Timan

If it's an '01 as said take it into the dealership and tell them to fix it. It should be under warranty! If you start yanking and drilling they may not honor that warranty!!!

Bill I would think the negative publicity one would receive if anyone on this list "stiffed" anyone else on the list would prevent any problem. I would just send a money order and worry about something else. Ed Windsor
