jet/filter/exhaust questions

Post by Chris Presley » Tue Jul 03, 2001 9:58 pm

Howdy all, I recently bought a y2k KLR 650, and have been enjoying it immensely. I have some questions about the subject matter and hopefully someone can help me out. I'm considering getting a jet kit, k&n filter and a supertrapp exhaust for it. What kind of gains will I enjoy with the filter and Jet kit? Is all this stuff worth the $$ ? Will the exhaust add any power ? How do they sound? Does it get really loud? (I don't want to get ear plugs, but I wouldn't mind enhancing the sound a bit) How 'bout steel braided cables? Do they enhance the braking much? What other braking enhancements can I do? (On a budget) Has anyone played with gear ratio's? How fast were you able to get your KLR to go? Thanks in advance. Chris. jet/filter/exhaust questions

My opinion is don't buy the jet kit. Just buy a few jets at $2.50 each. start with the 152. if you don't like it go down to 150 or up to 155. Drill out the cover plate from the idle mixture screw and adjust to 2-3/4 turns from seated position. You don't need to drill out the vaccum hole in the carbs slide thingy like the dyno jet kit says to. You will most likely get 5 miles better gas millage from the jet and idle mix change. I use and recomend the K+N air filter. keep your stock exhaust unless you have money to burn or like lots of noise.

Will I notice additional power? Much? Worth the effort? K&N> I've heard some riders complain about fine dust getting through. Have you noticed this? Exhaust> That seems to be the consensus. Chris.

jet/filter/exhaust questions

Heres my thoughts, jet kit: rule of thumb for years on cv carbed 4 cyl's has been to open the mix screws 1/2 turn from factory setting, shim the needle .020". The klr responds well to this too. The dynojet kit may give a bit more percieved throttle response in the midrange mainly due to the slide mod, you can still drill the slide without the kit. I recommend not drilling it to the 1/8" bit supplied, go about 1/2 way between the stock hole and 1/8". k&n: use em in my street bikes, every dirt bike I've tried them in I have found fine dust on the carb side of the filter. cans: Any can that makes (slightly) more power than the stocker sounds bitchen at first but will wear on you after awhile. I like the sound of the old 4" 'trapps way better than the new 3"er's. You need diameter for tone quality. Pipe or not try to wear earplugs on any ride over 20min with this bike, it's the wind that'll get ya, not the pipe. best gearing: depends how you use the bike, For street a 15 1/2 tooth sprocket would be perfect for me, finding the 16 too high and the 15 making me toe up for another gear. Oil level: (get your bat sheilds up) overfilling above the sightglass WILL blow oil out the breather and oil the airbox redlined at 100mph (indicated), trust me on this one. Don't do it, more is not better, upper line max.
