I have not check this out on the KLR but did so years ago on
Industrial engines with long valve trains. We're talking VHP
Waukeshau engines here. Rocker arms about 6" long and pushrod at
about 18" long. I set some up to a tight drag then fired the engine
up and let it rock and roll for a few hours then shut it down and
checked them again. It didn't tighten up more than about 1.5 to 2
thousandths max.
The reason we / I did this was because of a disscussion a bunch of us
heavey equipment mechanics were having on this same subject. Say
like, setting the valves when changing out the heads and then coming
back and checking them at later dates. On drilling rigs , most of the
time you don't have the time factor to let an engine cool down to do
maintenance. You shut it down, start the oil draining, pull the
filters, pop the valve covers, run the valves, check plugs and wires,
do the oil and filter thing, check belts and get it back on line.
I would have no problem setting valves warm on my klr. Limiting
factor would be getting my fingers too hot. :0)
