Heya KLRistas,
I had a '92 KLR for a year or so a couple years ago and then someone
stole it away from me... the peril of parking in San Francisco. That
is of course, after I fully Hinked it out.
Friday I bought another one, much more beat, and older ('88) . I'm
doing the standard once over and I thought I would repack the
supertrapp muffler that came with it since it's damn loud, and all of
the allen heads that hold the disks on are either broken off, or
broke off while I was unbolting them (yeah, I should have stopped
after the first one).
So two questions:
Have people had this happen and gotten the "studs" out. Is it worth
it?
And what's the cheapest way to get a new exhaust for this beast? Are
people selling their stockers?

Bummer about your bike!
Can't help you with the studs but I have seen several people selling
their stock pipe on here so just ask. I'm sure it was replaced with
an upgrade. Also if you'll go the DSN magazine, they have a
classified section. Check it out and you can also place a "wanted" ad
there.

That's the reason I went back to stock. Too darn loud and allen bolts stripping. This was with 6 disks. Don't like people to hear me arriving 4 blocks before I get there. I may wanna sneak up on them. I got another stocker and drilled 2 1/2" holes in it, painted it chrome silver and bolted it up. Andy, Now I'm riding aroud with race-core supertrap with no disks or end cap. Although it doesn't sound that loud to me, on the bike, I've noticed people fleeing at my approach, children crying and clutching their mothers, and for some reason there always seem to be a lot of car alarms going off wherever I park. You know, now that I took off my endcap took out the core and welded my muffler back together.. I seem to set off alarms too.. I get A LOT of looks too.. Dale> car alarms going off wherever I park. >

Change the fork oil to a heavier weight first. I think the stock oil is slightly thicker than Wesson. Go with a 15 weight fork oil. The only way to add pre-load is to put a longer spacer in the forks. Stock fork has a 5" spacer. Maybe just add another inch or two and the heavier fork oil. Air pressure isn't recommended because of possible fork seal failure. The valves are supposed to be used to release air pressure before removing fork caps. I'm sure some have run with some pressure in there but the better choice is the heavier oil and longer spacer. Shouldn't take more than an hour (if that) once you have everything ready to go. dat brooklyn bum> > Thanks!
