nklr going to beemer rally
Hi everybody,
This weekend is the Georgia Mountain Rally, it's a big BMW rally in N Ga.
I will be riding my trusty KLR, and this is my first BMW rally.
Do I need to have anything special to attend a beemer rally?
Like maybe my own jar of Grey Poupon? Or maybe hook up a capuchino machine
in one of my Givis?
I would hate to go to this rally, and not be prepared...

Mark,
You have Beemer people confused with Harley poseurs. All you need to
attend a BMW rally is about $30, a good attitude and a fairly quiet
bike. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt if you could roll up another 20,000 or
30,000 miles on your KLR before the rally starts. Where your Harley
owners (note I did not say "riders") check out each other's chrome
bits, BMW riders judge their brethren's devotion to riding by their
odometers. You are in for an education, Mark.

Mark,
To attend the BMW rally, the following are mandatory:
1. Aerostich Roadcrafter or Darien suit.
2. Hard saddle bags (Givi will do in a pinch) on you bike at all
times even if they are empty. They may give you a discount if you
have a tail trunk too.
3. Flip face helmet. A Schuberth will give instant acceptance, but
other brands are acceptable.
4. Centerstand is a must and you must put your bike up on it's stand
no matter how short a time you plan on parking it.
While there, you must buy everything possible such as..
Little flashing led lights to enhance your brake light
Driving lights..
Anything that makes you look like a long distanst tourer even if you
are not.
Think up a good story about some major mechanical issue about your
bike (I know it's hard on a KLR because they don't break but this is
something you have to do) and be prepared to wax nostalgic about it
when the inevitable BMW conversation turns to "I remember when I
replaced my... a) driveshaft b)transmission c) pushrod seals d)diode
board e)broken subframe f)entire bike.....
Have fun
Gino

Mark, you're doing it just right, by taking the KLR. Although I have
an R11 for long road trips and other tasks, when I go to a beemer
nerd rally I always take the KLR. If you take a bmw nobody will talk
to you.
If you take the KLR, they'll think you're Indiana Jones and they'll
all want your autograph (I tell 'em I don't do autographs).
PS, they drink regular coffee and the pot is usually always on.

I will be at the GA Mountain Rally as well, one of my faves of the year. The associated "dual sport" ride is rather non-technical, more of a high-speed romp down a bunch of dirt roads that is no challenge (but a lot of fun, IMHO) on a stock KLR. I have found participants at this rally to be a friendly, earthy bunch. I expect that we will not be the only KLRs in attendance. Usually the KLR/KLX population is something like a half dozen or so. They are fond of comparing odometer mileage, though. -Tom '96 KLR 650 48,000 miles and counting...>Mark, > >You have Beemer people confused with Harley poseurs. All you need to go to a BMW rally is a bike ( most of them) or just show up
with a bike on a trailer or in the back of a pickup. As for the rallies
I've been to , the brand did n't matter. Just the attitude. Go with a
positive attitude and you'll have a lot of fun and meet a lot of good people
( as in most brand rallies). Now, some of the larger rallies where they be
pressed for room, they'll specifiy either be on a BMW or be with a rider as
a guest. I tend to do the small ones where they just want you to show up.
What to wear. Well, Tshirt and jeans with tennis shoes to Aerostich.
What ever turns you on. I was never impressed by what a rider wears or
didn't wear.
I,. me , myself am going to the Wilderness Rally put on by the RAMS BMW club
of Memphis. It's a low keyed rally about 80 miles or so north of Little Rock
near a small town called Harriet on the Eastern end of the Buffalo River
Canyon. There's about 3 miles of typical Ozark mountain road down to the
campsite off Hwy 14 which only has a one hole portalet as the only modern
convience. We generally bathe and cook and camp on the river. This trip we
chose to run the many beautiful curvy paved roads of the northern ozarks
instead of the gravel roads. So, it's a BMW trip and the KLR will rest.

Thanks for the tips everybody, I think this rally is gonna be alot of
fun.
I will be riding up with Punky & Lew, so at least we will have a
guard dog to watch our bikes, and protect us from the hoards of
beemer riders.
I have never been to that particular campground before, but I know a
few trails in the area, maybe they will let me lead the dual sport
run. hee hee hee!
I will keep my Givis on the bike, even after I unload them, just to
look cool. (unless they really do let me lead a few of them down some
trails, then I'll leave the boxes behind.) Single track trails are
hell on the givis.
Heres a link for anybody that needs it-
http://www.bmwoga.org/2001gmr/index.htm
I have met bmw riders that have been to this rally in years past, and
it sounds like it's gonna be alot of fun.
I know several of you are going to this rally, so if you see us
there, say HI! We shouldnt be hard to find! Just look for the KLR's.

You guys are Yuppie-phobes. Not surprising on a list populated by the radical right (especially the gun toting Canucks). I'll bet you don't think that Harley profilers have the right to marry just because you don't sanction their lifestyle. Like wise Bemmer types, I'm sure you would deny them the right to adopt children.
