If you really want to flip them out... Stand up on your pegs and wave... Amazing what kind of looks you'll get as you go roaring down the highway at 65+ on your pegs. I have one problem. I come from Sweden, and live in Ireland at the moment. First of all, they drive on the left hand side of the road which means that if you want to wave with the hand that is towards the middle of the road, you have to let go of the accelerator. Secondly, no one, and I mean NO ONE, will ever wave back. Missing sweden I am, everyone but HD riders wave at you.   I once wanted to check the colour on the spark plag at WOT, wide open throttle, which means driving at top speed for a couple of minutes and then killing it at speed so to preserve the colour. Then you have to wait until the engine is cool which meant that every bike that passed, they stopped and wanted to help the guy that had the broken motorbike. Got almost annoying. That would not happen here.   Claes, a swede in Dublin.

I've been in a lot of sports; motorcycling is just one. I've been riding for over thirty years and had at least one bike for the last twenty plus. One thing that effects my respect for others in "my sports" is their reasons for participating. I truly respect people that participate in a sport because they simply enjoy it, or as in the case of motorcycles and others, it provides a means to an end (transpo for mc's). What I truly don't respect is people that participate to "be seen", or to make a fashion statement. I guess I cannot simply buy the line about people being ok just because they ride; I've certainly met my fair share of idiots on bikes. Heck, the local drinking establishments in my area draw a lot of guys on bikes I think very poorly of (and yes I do know they probably don't give a crap about what I think) AFTER talking with them. Let's face it, certain types of bikes draw more of certain types of folks. I really think poorly of the guy's that hang glide "to be seen". The nice thing in that sport is that those types usually lose interest quickly, or help clean the gene pool if they persist... Oops, I guess I'm ranting. Sorry ;-] Steve A.

We humans are a diverse bunch of flakes. I am amazed that right in the middle of a group of people that are fighting to do away with helmet laws, is a bunch that won't get on a bike without space-vacuum capable helmets, anti-ballistic clown suits, and boots that resemble the very casts that you wear after you break your leg. (I'm not questioning the wisdom!) I live in an area where my neighbors dress up like cowboys, ride horses, round up, brand, and de-horn cattle, then walk around with cow shit on their boots and mis-trust vegetarians, gays, and gun controllers. Every year at least one is killed and several maimed and paralyzed as they're thrown and rolled over by their horses. They're kicked, stomped, horned, bit by rattlers and cottonmouths, threatened by alligators, and wild hogs, and bled by mosquitos tall enough to stand flat footed on the ground and screw a cow. They wear no armor, no bullet proof clothes, in fact, no protective clothing beyond a pair of boots and sometimes chaps. And yet, every one of them strongly suggests that I am crazy for riding a motorcycle. What I'm getting at, is that we're all nuts and deserve no respect simply for what we do for enjoyment or wear for appearance. Just smile and wave at each other and keep this thought, "At least I'm not that freekin' crazy!" And imagine them naked. -- bierdo

I think the majority if not all of us stop to help stranded motorcyclists. I do, and I have been helped more than once as well. I guess it's the "yuppie biker" with his Harley which was purchased as a piece of "driveway jewelry" that get up my nose, as the British say. It isn't their choice of bike but their choice of attitude that puts me off. Pretenders/imposters don't impress me much. I would however feel honor bound to stop and help if they were stranded. I always thought it was because they couldn't see you because they had been driving to long with a fake helmet and the smallest (coolest) sunglasses they could find and their eyes were watering. One thing I forgot to add. When I mentioned that quite a few Harleys wave, it seems to be the old bikers that wave. The yuppies are only out there because all their yuppie friends have Harleys so they have to have one too. If you aren't on one, they will never wave, but if you look real close, you might be able to see them looking down their noses at the others on "lesser" machines. Don Detloff Fair Haven, MI A14

Several years ago, I worked part-time at an airport and used to get free avgas for my KZ650. No big perceivable performance change, but I too loved that smell. I also heated my home with Jet-A. Mark B2 A2
