Gino, I'm not sure about the frame to use, but have you seen the new 650cc V-Twin that Kawasaki is putting in an ATV? I'd like to see that sitting in a bike ... something like the new KTM, but not so FUGLY. Don Detloff Fair Haven, MI A14 P.S. Oh yeah ... it has to be green!

Dan- I can't seem to find hide-nor-hair of that ATV on the BigK website... Any idea what model it might be... Sounds like a killer motor to start a project with! Perhaps we'll see not only the KLR650D but also the KLR650V? The TDM has a lot of value even if the public didn't go for it. But make sure it wasn't raced. Crazy you say? Perhaps, but a couple of years I saw someone riding a TDM in a support class for Twins at Mid-Ohio. It wasn't competitive.... Yamaha used to build a sportbike for the European market using a hotter tuned version of the same engine, with a crank that gave it the same firing pattern as a Duc. Even though the TDM was not a dual purpose bike, you could do a lot to convert it to a road oriented one like the Tiger. I think it failed in the US for a number of reasons. It was pretty expensive for a twin at a time when we were still in love with multis. It also had a bad price/performance ratio. Finally, it's styling was, shall we say, unique. No one could really tell what it was. And those who could didn't like what they saw. I, on the other hand, loved it. But I love the Pacifc Coast, too, so what do I know? The sad part is I actually owned one and I sold it. Now I wouldn't mind having it back. When they ran good, they were wonderful, but maintenance was a shere nightmare on the TDM. Gino

I've looked over a SV650 with exactly that in mind. What concerned me was the, shall we say, challenge of protecting the forward cylinder for off pavement use. It would have to survive the lines I pick, or more correctly, fail to pick, when meandering on rocky roads. Then there's the tranny thing......never been on one but I doubt with any combo of sprockets it could simultaneously have a low enough 1st for off road and a high enough final gear for all day high speed cruising. You don't carry extra sprockets on the world's best dual sport. Bogdan
