Speaking personally....I've had thoughts of authoring something alongthose lines thematically......its honorable 'work', that of self-inquiry... ....the action of reflection.......and it is 'work'.

Tao of the Ride(G.Garripoli), Jupiters Travels(T. Simon). Both available through Whitehorse Press I believe.

Why Motorcycles? The short answer: Its a physical thang. Now let me splain it to ya. First you crawl, then you walk, then you run, and finally you ride. A bicycle gives you much greater range without the effort of trodding along. Weren't blasting down those hills on your bicycle a wonderful experience? But then it was the dreaded uphills that must be conquered to enjoy the next downhill. Thus my lifelong love of the sport of motorcycling a bicycle with a motor. Now the hills are no problem and in fact, the bigger the hill the better! Hills are fun. So much fun that "Hill Climbing" is a subset of our wonderful sport. When you put a motor on two wheels it is simply magic for those so disposed. It all starts inside that wonderful device called the internal combustion engine. Al Sore hates em .. but I luvs em. Admit it so do you. The piston goes down drawing in a fresh charge of air and fuel, the flywheel carries the motion through bottom dead center and the piston stops and then changes direction and heads towards its reward. Now as the piston fights to compress that combustible mixture, the flywheel struggles to provide the energy to get it to its appointment with ignition. It caint be early and it caint be late. Ignition must be just right to propel our piston back on its journey with enough energy to not only allow the engine to keep running, but must supply enough to spin the rear tire via the primary gear set and clutch, the tranny, chain and sprockets, the rear hub, spokes, rim and finally the tire. Spin the tire. That's right, I said spin the rear tire! And Slide back on the seat as you lift the front wheel. And click the next gear while controlling the throttle. There it is . the balance point. She is going down, more throttle ..yea, she's coming back. .. balanced just right. Another gear .go go . go. Settle down now, but keep accelerating hard. Here comes the corner. Hard on the binders and at just the right moment the rear starts to come around and you get on the gas and come out harder than ever before. You struggle to stay with her and she pulls hard to get away. Its a war. Its a love affair. Its chaos. Its harmony. Its man and machine, sometimes working together and sometimes - Knot. Like is said, "Its a physical thang."

I agree Fred. Toby's inspired query has brought out the poet hidden in the hardened and cynical soul of many a lister. I haven't seen an uninteresting post on this thread. They should be put together in a volume bound in gold. Bogdan.......P.S. Your poem "There Once Was a Farmer Named Fred" has still not been equaled on the list when pure aesthetic merit was the criteria.

Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 08:48:17 -0000 From: "Gary Webb" Since I'm going to be laid up for at least a month with my ankle in a cast, I'm looking for more good books on our favorite subject. Anyone got any suggestions? Gary Webb Sacramento, CA '98 KLR 650 (RIP) '00 Aprilia Pegaso 650 **************************** If you're akin to adventure touring, I recommend Ted Simon's "Jupiter's Travels" which I'm in the process of reading and enjoying every word. also "10 Years on Two Wheels" by Helge Pederson. More of a pictorial of his RTW ride, but a spectacular one at that. and "Around the World on Hot Air and Two Wheels" by the late Malcolm Forbes. Out of print, but an inspiring book and collector's item if you can find it. A different aproach to RTW motorcycle travel in this one. Darrel A12 Cal Posse

I've got a reason I got into motorcycles that's probably different than most. It is the closest thing I've found to riding a horse. I've got both, & I could write pages on advantages & disadvantages of each, and there are different times or situations where one is vastly superior to the other, but in short they both give a taste, a smoothness, and drinkability you will find in no other beer(oops, wrong thread) a sense of freedom and relaxation that I haven't found any other way. I think it's partly because they both require a certain degree of concentration that forces you to shut out all the problems that otherwise prevent true relaxation. Gary A15
