oil update

Post by mule2b@aol.com » Tue Oct 17, 2000 12:12 am

After about 1,500 miles with Castrol R4 fully synthetic oil, I'm not so sure it's the best oil for the KLR. I've noticed more skipped shifts and false neutrals than when I ran 50/50 oil (Castrol Actevo and Honda HP4). Horsepower increase? I dunno; if there is it's not significant. I can't feel an improvement. The aspect that stills remains a bit mystical to me is additive/formula differences aimed at longer engine life. All of the oils I've used have been SG rated. The Honda HP4 claims to have "Moly" blended in, whatever that is. Anyone know which oil or oils would preserve the engine the longest? Which ones have the best additive mixes. This, to me, would be the most important deciding factor when purchasing oil from now on. Steve "The Mule" A14

I've noticed false neutral and skips with three oil brands. Mobil 1 15-50 was the best behaving but needed changing at 1000 miles. Spectro 10-40 needed it at 1000 too, but I bought the bike with 700 miles on the Spectro change so I don't know what it was like fresh. I now have Castrol GTX 20-50 in my bike with about 300 miles on the change. Shifting still isn't as good as it was with the Mobil 1, so I may go back to it next change. Anyone else have similiar results? Brad A9

hmph. regardless of oil, i've never noticed a missed shift or false neutral on my klr, except when i only nudge the lever, instead of getting a solid push that moves the lever through its entire range of travel. allegedly, my klx300 is prone to popping out of second, but this also i have only observed when i've made a really half-assed shift.

You have to shift a KLR! Gino, a shiftless bum.

Hi Brad, Never had a shift/neutral problem. Don't think I could find a false one if I tried. It improved a lot too when I changed from Motul semi 15/50 to BelRay EXS 15/50. Regards, Brian A14 D17

Brad, I used Mobil 1 synthetic on my A-14 since new. I am aware that the gearbox on these monsters are not "sewing machine" smooth; but suspected the oil was in part contributing to this effect. After some research I concluded that synthetic automotive oils do lack critical high pressure agents which are required for motorcycle application. On this concept I switched to Honda HP 20w-50. Since then, the shifting is significantly smoother. Good luck, Peter A-14

I don't understand? How does one know it needs changing? For the best info/testing on oil take a look at the last issue of Motorcycle Consumer News. My Y2k has been shifting very nicely with regular dinolube.

Yeah, I have switched over to Honda HP since thats what Honda recomends for the XR. No need to buy more than one brand of oil, although I was very happy with Motul synthetic. I change my oil every 2500 miles on the KLR and have had zero problems, other than clunky shifting between 1st and 2nd.
